A friend has a contract to deliver Flash Advertising on large screens to retail stores. Obviously he wants to keep the hardware to a minimum. Would it be possible for him to use Ubuntu or a lite distro to play the content and receive the updates remotely? It is possible to save the Flash content as an SWF rather than an EXE, in fact, that is better because then the file sizes are smaller. Video is a last resort because the file sizes would be huge then. Any advice? The screens will be installed in the retail outlet with a small computer. The computer will simply boot into the content and loop the content all day. Once a week we will remotely upload new content.

His first thought was to use Windows XP Home based machines with the Flash content as an EXE and the remote connections via Logmein. But if we can save R1000 per machine for the Windows licenses it will be huge.

Advice please?

I am definitely sure this is possible. In fact doing a simple package search on my Archlinux install on here I get:

aur/bin32-flashplayer-standalone 10.0.22.87-2 (7)
Macromedia standalone flash player (nonfree)

So I assume that should work as is. If that fail, there is always the flash plugin for Firefox, and Firefox 3.5 can go full screen which only leaves a small grey line at the top, though I think that is not desirable.

I wonder how an eee pc would cope with running all day.

I don't think that the eee has a vga port so it won't be able to connect to the external display.

With all models, an external display can be supported through a standard VGA connector. The manufacturer does not give any specifications on maximum resolution and display configuration (mirroring, extended desktop), but most models can handle a 19" external display at native resolution of 1680 x 1050, and even a 24" display at a native 1920 x 1200, although performance starts to slow down.

or maybe you meant s-video, which i dont think it has

Well I wanted to say sometimes people should check their facts before just posting. We have the Acer AONE netbooks at work for fun, and they surely do have an analog vga output. But the guy above me already found the relevant info on wikipedia.

Ja, he did consider the EEE PC.... but at R4000 a shot they do not come cheap.

It would be cheaper for us to get custom built computers around R2000 each... even though they are larger in size.

The new LG x120 comes with a VGA port and 3g built in.
I don't know if it has landed yet.

So is there a solution for garyvdhs problem yet?

Ja, thanks! After doing some testing, the SWF files play perfectly in Ubuntu with the standalone player! Now we are just testing the remote updating procedures! :)

Thanks Guys.
