Does anybody know if there is any way I can keep the cost of building a pool down? The prices I have seen average between R45 000 and R50 000 for a 5x3m pool. I would love to know how I can keep the cost below this but not compromise on the pool.

Do the following:

- Get your Building Plans pre approved for a swimming pool
- Buy Fibreglass (Blue / White)
- Ask for specs to dig your own hole
- Try to buy as much of your own material
- Buy your own pump and filter
- Ask for a Cash Discount

PM for more info.

In all honesty, this is one luxury item I just do not desire at all. There are lots of other things I'd rather choose above a pool.

That's just me, I guess :)

Must be.

There is nothing better than submerging yourself in water, especially in the heat of summer. Even a splash pool is fantastic!

Extra points if you have a jacuzzi attached... but then you're just going straight past luxury on a beeline for decadent! ;)

SlinkyMike, no wonder your nick is Slinky, there's nothing more pleasurable than slinking about in the water, drifting on you back, looking up at the blue sky, a feeling of lightness as your less dense body maintains it's floating position on the liquid beneath it, the coolness and primal familiarity of being of and in water, the absolute appreciation on a hot day.

Heavenly.

We are creatures of water, living on a water planet.. go figure :)

I qualify :)

I love my pool - its only a 5mx3m - and I have a double bed lilo to float around on, six pack tied to the kreepy. when it gets dark, hop in the jacuzzi (at 38 degrees). :p I personally can't wait for summer again.

And my project for early next year is to slightly heat the pool for evening use.

Unless it is indoors, it only spells skin cancer to me. The days of treating the sun with kid gloves have arrived.

Like most saffers, I love the feeling of the sun on my skin, but I put on a LOT of protective cream when I venture outside.

I hope the kreepy is off otherwise you're going to have a lot of froth...

...left out one thing: silence.

When you head is underwater, so peaceful.

I'm not going to go into detail about the pool jacuzzi up at my place as I'll only come off a brat ;)
...but in terms of pool heating: solar is the way to go. I have the thin black tubing version (WTF is this called pls?) and it is perfect, just takes off that edge whilst leaving the temperature at a refreshing level. I can highly recommend it.

Yip - its just to hold it near the bottom and keep it cool - the little rings six packs come in fit perfectly over the kreepy pipe.

Mine just came with the house :)

Thats the way I plan on going - but I need to move my pool pump, and the area around the pool is bricked (those small square bricks) - so its quite a project... looking forward to it... I like the idea of a warm pool in the evening.

You know whats really cool? I have a colour changing LED pool light... it slowly cycles through a few colours... each time you flip the on/off switch it changes 'display' modes.... you can also set it to display one colour, e.g. dark blue, purple, light blue, red, green, etc.

One day when I'm big I'm going to 'install' a pool in my yard. I have the space but I don't have the money :(

Is that the cost for fibreglass pools?
Yes. I swear it's price fixing :(
Detonate an Ookfart(tm) where you want the pool? :p
Oke you are hired :D

I'm with you I rather have a pool than a new kitchen. :D I'm a water baby.
On sunday it will be the 22 August and 27 in pta. Imagine the temp mid summer this year.

I found these people:http://www.diyza.com/

I have a friend that build his pool this way. I'm just wary of the movement of the soil and cracks in the swimming pool. I will pay the "profesionals to do the pump instalation and the "technical stuff.

The think that irks me about the quotes is that it does not include the rubble removal or if they find rock. So no jack hammering included in the price.

The "bath" is about R 20 000. What the hell cost R 30 000 if the rubble and the rock is not included O_o.

I would def make sure about this one. My folks were on their way to a nice big pool when the builders discovered that there where some prehistoric boulders that could not be blasted so they incurred major unforeseen costs to elevate the land, build the retainer wall and the pool above land. Now they have a double story pool with a single story house and they have to refill and compact the the ground around the pool every couple of years.( looks good tho and great entertainment area)
But ended up costing nearly double what they where quoted.

Oh and they also kept cost down by buying all the materials and equipment themselves.
