Let's see. We've had SARS, bird flu, mad cow disease, and now swine flu. What will they think of next?

PS. If I missed out any feel free to add :)

And to those panicking about how many will die. I'm thinking the world could do without any human beans. Would actually be a good thing.

So let me get this straight - there is both a prevention and a cure for swine flu, as discussed on 702, yet there is global panic!?

Bloody irresponsible sensationalism if you ask me...

First world countries should be fine as they have the infrastructure to handle a fairly large outbreak. The problem comes from countries like ours which have fairly limited health resources which could quickly get overwhelmed from a large outbreak. Having a cure is only useful if the health system can quickly administer it. Most of Mexico's death came from people not seeking treatment early enough.

Another problem is the prevalence of aids.

Imagine an outbreak in a few squatter camps, things could get ungly quickly.

So i would think this is not sensationalism, or simply drug companies looking to make a quick buck, it's a potentially very serious problem which righly needs the worlds attention.

Didn't the sky fall when avian flu broke out?
God must have installed a new sky then... ah well...

On the one had it is great to see that the monitoring and communication systems are working. If something seriously serious broke out there is a good chance that it will be detected and steps taken. All for that.

The other view that I have is that the 9/11 attack did allow the US government to pass some laws that ordinarily would have been kicked into touch because of civil liberty infringements. I suspect that there could be an element of the fear allowing for easy introduction of monitoring equipment into airports. Sure, they have been doing this for a while now - but maybe the equipment does more than just measure your temperature.

It is also a good excuse to monitor people's behaviour and movement. A simple question could have the benefit of gaining quite a few responses. 'Excuse me sir, but where have you just come from?" is easy to ask and can differentiate answers into a number of categories - i.e. all those from Mexico, all those from terrorist training camps in Syria, etc.

as of late this afternoon tamiflu was out of stock at most of the bigger pharmacies in pta. global panic ftl.

while the flu season is due to run its course in the North soon, it is due to start in the Southern hemisphere

Hope so too... sometimes I'm glad we live way down here... not out of it... but generally better off ;)

Edit: (2009-04-29) Its hit Cape Town today.. they say the woman is doing okay
Goverment says its has plenty capsules of the "fix".. but won't say what it is... er... beetroot.. african potato... why hold it secretive ? :(
I think we should be pushing for way more information

Just shower and scrub your knob thoroughly, that'll fix it ;)

I've chosen to be on the side of Randall Flagg.

+1

Less human beings, the less mother nature suffers and the less animals suffer.

This will be HUGE, just like the previous Bird Flu / SARS pandemics that ravaged the world and decimated populations.

No human beans?

One can't let such an unutterably disgusting statement slip by without expressing revulsion at your deeply anti-human sentiments. Every one is created in imago dei, so I guess that's your real target, and people are just an infestation? I shudder to think what you'd do if you ever got into a position of authority.

I haven't read the whole thread, so forgive me if this has been said already.

Swine flu is no more serious than 'regular' flu. To go on about people dying in Mexico because of it is being very selective about your facts. Mexico is a laregly poor country with a shocking public health system. People in Mexico get a headache and die from it - it's nothing to do with swine flu.

This whole fear-mongering exercise is nothing more than a conspiracy by pharmacutical companies to sell their old stock of the Tamiflu vaccine. That and lots and lots of masks.

Twenty people die of swine flu and everybody wants to wear a mask... A million people die of AIDS in the same time and no one wants to wear a condom!
