Seeing as there isn't really a proper Switch thread around I figured we could use this to discuss the upcoming heavily-rumoured unnamed Switch sequel, for now referred to as Switch 2 (S2).

Yesterday was a blowout for S2 leaks. Eurogamer and VGC reported that it was demoed behind closed doors at Gamescom, and key highlights are:

- Higher resolution version of BOTW shown off, no confirmation if it'll be an actual game
- Unreal Engine 5 Matrix demo shown off with ray-tracing and DLSS, and 'visuals comparable to Sony‘s and Microsoft’s current-gen consoles.'

Additionally, Universo Nintendo also had this to say:

From my sources now: The DLSS version shown behind closed doors by the "Nintendo Switch 2" tech demo was 3.1 and not 3.5 as reported or pointed out by Eurogamer.
Ray-Tracing is indeed possible and the RAM memory I was told was 12 GB for the consumer

I think it's likely that these leaks are credible and do reflect the real specs of the S2. Nintendo would not show off something that wasn't realistic, and those outlets aren't known to publish fake rumours.

Worth noting that nobody is suggesting that S2 will be able to compete with PS5 on raw specs. It's not even a remote possibility that it could be close to as powerful as current-gen consoles and still have a power envelope of 5-20w. DLSS will have to be doing a LOT of the heavy lifting here. However, if it can look even half as good as a PS5 when docked, it's going to be extremely competitive and far beyond what anyone would have expected for a new Nintendo console. If it can do ray tracing I'll be shocked.

Doctre81 is on the money with this take I think:

Still 12gb is a lot. Rog Ally has 16gb but it also has to drive Windows 11. Switch 1 has only 4gb.

Nintendo likes to price at a premium. Just concerned about how much it would cost locally if those specs are confirmed to be true

I had a talk with a friend the other day regarding upscaling, since it became heavily focus in PC gaming that certain games is literally build around it. So we were wondering if consoles will go that direction to focus on using DLSS/FSR.

Will interesting to see how Nintendo will be implementing DLSS on their handheld and if it will be focus point for their future games. I doubt we will see the PS5 performance, but maybe with DLSS tech it can maybe come close to it.

I am concerned about power consumption.
Current Switch is esp great for our Eskom schedules, even at Stage 6.

Switch's 10W power draw means I can still use a TV to play games

My concern is DLSS can make Good -> better, can't make crap -> good.

1080p upscaled to 4K looks amazing
240P upscaled to 4K will still be crap

Lol yeah that's true. Well, I guess there's always the option to upscale to 1080p if 4k is unattainable by a game. Honestly I wasn't even expecting more than 1080p for the next-gen Switch. If it could just have managed native resolution and stable framerates I would have been pretty satisfied.

I'll somma throw this in here:

New Nintendo patent suggests Switch 2 may solve joycon drift

In one filing, Nintendo’s patent details a joystick that uses a magnetic field to send its movement through the controller, which is almost definitely a hall effect joystick.
Some swear by this technology - which was already used way back by Sega for the Dreamcast.

Good. Good. Good.

Awesome stuff. Meanwhile they’re still having an insanely good year for game releases. F-Zero 99 and new Donkey Kong rumored to be featured in the direct next week.

Another rumour, this one to be taken with a huge grain of salt - claiming that the original T239 SOC planned for the Switch2 a few years ago before the OLED model launched has since been superseded by a newer SOC. It makes sense if it can actually support DLSS 3 and RTX. But again, it’s pointing to a significantly faster device than anything previously estimated
