Switch it off: Eskom

Like I said before, they should rather switch off the supply to the neighbouring countries that are pulling us down with them.

Why should we suffer because they are too incompetent and corrupt to keep their own supply going?

We can't switch them off. We have contracts in place that were signed years ago, and to turn them off would have massive political implications.

Of course, but then why does that supersede the contracts we as consumers and businesses have with Eskom to pay them a truckload of money every month and they not keeping their end of the bargain?

Also, do those countries even pay on time and the full amount as agreed, or are they given credit until the whole thing collapses due to non-payment?

Because it's a pre-existing contract. It was drawn up ages before we had power issues.

MAYBE HAVE ENOUGH DRY COAL FOR THIS!... beating a dead horse now... Eskom you dug yourself into this mess...

I'm doing my part. Geyser thermostat broke. Basically boiled the water in the geyser. So I had to turn it off. I suspect some valve damage as well. Aarrggghhhh

Alot of people have already started the effort on getting their houses to be more power efficient (LED bulbs, geyser blankets, aerated shower heads, dishwashers)... I guess it won't be long before the law of diminishing returns kicks in and there's not much more efficient you can get without incurring major cost, which then defeats the exercise for the average person cos it's really all about saving on cost.
Alternative energy has to be the way to go, even for the man on the street, and especially for the working class who can just about afford the high initial cost if they budget for it properly.
I'm gonna start putting some thought and effort into maximising my home's power efficiency and then start looking into solar. From my basic calculations, my bill for 2015 will probably hit R20k.

I forsee another price hike if our government cannot come up with the funding... All small towns get affected with load-shedding(mines etc) . Even met this lady who has a generator and says it's normal here happens every 5 times a month.

I feel for those who are in hospitals do they phone the hospital up and say load-shedding is about to begin. Imagine if their backup generator doesn't start.. They damage it causes.

I sometimes plug out my laptop and let it run on its battery.

That's how I am doing my bit to save electricity in South Africa. ;)

I've done a fair chunk already to make my house more efficient..

Eskom can go and fsck themselves as far as I'm concerned. It makes no difference WHAT we as consumers do, they will still hike the prices and subject us to rolling blackouts.
