Switch it off: Eskom

They will, its called load shedding.

That's the idea.. please loadshed me whenever your unbridled incompetence dictates, just for gods sake stop whining about how I am somehow responsible for your problem.

I've managed to bring my household electricity down to R300 a month with two adults and a toddler, how much more do they want me to bring it down?

WTF!?
According to Botswanan News Sources, the main power line between SA and Botswana has been offline for more than 12 hours.

*The power failure affects much of the country

* BPC does not know when power will be restored

* Morupule and South African transmission have been lost

According to Botswana Power Corporation the power cut was occasioned by the main transmission line that was lost in Matimba in South Africa to Phokoje in Botswana. This is the transmission which is used to import power from South Africa.

The situation was further compounded by the power failure at the Morupule Power Station.

"The loss of the Matimba/Phokoje Transmission Line is due to a fault on this line and patrols by BPC and Eskom are currently in progress to locate the fault", a statement from BPC publicity chief Tlhomamiso Selato reads.

Contingency measures have been put in place to restore supply to some parts of the country through other inter-connectors from Spitzkop in South Africa and Bulawayo, Zimbabwe albeit with limited capacity.

The Emergency Power facility has also been put in service to alleviate the power shortage. The maximum load which can be supported by the above-mentioned measures is approximately 300MW (60% of peak load).

"BPC and Eskom staff are working round the clock to restore the Matimba/Phokoje interconnector in the shortest possible time. Stakeholders will be given regular updates on the situation.

The corporation sincerely regrets any inconvenience that may be caused by this interruption and assures our customers of our commitment to serve at all times", ends the statement.

FYI, from the latest bulletin:

Thursday's available capacity was at 31293MW and the forecast usage was at 30952MW. Planned maintenance was at about 3500MW and unplanned maintenance at 8750MW.

From that, we were sitting at just over 1% available power yesterday.

SO peak BW load is 500MW?

We should shut up about it. One smelter uses more than that whole country - two smelters (Hillside and Mozal) use 9% of SA's peak load, or about 1.5 GW each

And that was with below normal supply to Botswana due to the mainline being down

So whilst there are problems like these do the neighboring countries feeding off SA also suffer or we keep those lines running at full capacity no matter what? Me thinks the contracts say we would rather have a total blackout in SA before the neighbors start to feel the pinch

We can't switch them off. We have contracts in place that were signed years ago, and to turn them off would have massive political implications.

Yeah, our human rights are less important than relations with another country that probably does not provide us much.

Once again, Botswana's peak load is 1.4% of eskom's capacity. Switching them off doesn't gain us much, and hurts us a lot more reputationally.

same old story... start with the f*n useless councils. how many cellphone chargers, TVs on standby etc, use as much electricity as one highway light? everywhere i go, i see street lamps burning in the sunlight.
they can save a crap load of electricity by just using street & highway lights in the dark only, the way a light is meant to.
there can really only be one valid reason for having them burn in the day; stupid idiots in charge, and k@k management.

people will be much more willing to reduce their own electricity usage, if they don't see senseless gov wastage everywhere they go
