I havent renewed my contract in ages.

I'm in the same position--I haven't renewed and I don't do it immediately each time the contract expires then I stay on month-to-month. But here is the thing--do you realize, you're now paying a loaded monthly amount which still includes the phone repayment portion.

The providers are making a killing--and we can do nothing about it.

Switch to a 4u Contract. No monthly subscription.
For the third time in less than a year, Vodacom, MTN and Cell C have yet again requested telecoms regulator Icasa to grant them an indefinite extension to the deadline by which they would to sort out the pertinent issues required to adopt MNP
They simply dont want to be bothered by any further deadlines and will implement it when they feel like it and not before.

operators should not be seen to be taking consumers for granted
They have, they still do and will continue to take consumers for granted.
I see no big change on the horizon for the South African Cash Cow other than this year will flow into next year and so on and so forth. Same old. :p

That makes it almost sound like its for the good of the people. Call it what it is - government cash cows grazing on the lifeblood of its citizens.

Heard our fav Icasa personality Paris on the news. He says 'we want to implement MNP correctly...We don't want to do things in a rush and do it wrong'. Looks like ICASA is going to grant the extention indefinitely. So basically indefinitely meaning that no further date will be set for the operators to abide to. Paris u useless twat...

As for the operators, if this isn't a form of collusion I'm not sure what is.

ICASA should be fined and disbanded...

Message sent to ICASA:

After reading your story it makes me think. My contract expired July 2006 I wanted to cancel. Actually I did cancel but then I heard the number move thingy will be active in september. Now they are delaying it *again*

So i'm wondering, should I cancel and just get a new number. or should I wait and see what happens

If you're on vodacom you can go month to month at your current rate or even switch to the 4u contract which has no monthly subs.

If you're mtn or cellc there might also be options. The qn is how valuable to you is keeping your number?

Well seeing I'm also waiting for the Nokia E70 I'll keep my contract and number as is. Thanks for the advice bwana!

Fined? Let's just have them shot. Or have a reality TV show where Telkom and cellphone customers hunt them down like...well like ICASA members.

Related to this, anyone in the know expect 'forum-shopping' to be a problem under new laws, or has this been sufficiently covered? ('Forum-shopping' - looking for the body with least amount of fining/penalty-imposing powers. Like Telkom has been doing with ICASA and Competition Commission- trying to argue that the less powerful body has jurisdiction instead of the more powerful one.)
The life assurance industry seems to be playing this game between the FSB and SA Revenue Services.
