Hey guys/gals,

I have a friend that has been staying in Dubai for 6 years now, but she is thinking of moving back to SA. Now, she never had a drivers licence here, but she has one in Dubai, but it's for automatic cars only.

Will she be able to "swop" it for a local licence (obviously also our automatic cars one) or will she have to start from new?

BTW, I think I will get a better answer from you guys, than to phone our licensing department. :p

There are certain conditions. But yes she should be able to have it converted to a South African licence. PM me if you need additional info.

The best thing is to get an international drivers license, then she can just drive here. Not sure for how long though

I have a friend who tried to do this, he was told he could etc etc but ultimately he came to SA and had to do his learners and then drivers the same way we all did.

Thanx guys.

ShaunSA, will most probably contact you closer to the time to get some guidance.

No problem :)

@gdiza. That is why I mentioned it is conditional. Of course it also helps to deal with a Licensing Authority that knows how it works :D

12 months, as long as it's a credit-card style license. After 12 months, license is void and you have to start again (learners etc)
