Hi everyone, what a beautiful day for good news.
Broadband is getting so insanely cheap this was almost not worth mentioning but look what i just read on the DSTV.com forum.......

On Wednesday (24 March) at 21h00 DStv's Hallmark Channel will disappear on Channel 108 forever, to be re-invented into the Universal Channel.

The channel still features signature Hallmark series including shows such as Law & Order, Being Erica and Monk, but the look, feel and branding has been re-created.

The channel debuts with an evening of premieres that feature new seasons that haven't been broadcast previously - either on Hallmark or any other channel available to us.

Hallmark and the Universal Channel, are owned by Universal Networks International (part of NBC Universal), who have four other channels too - one of which happens to be the SyFy channel.




You may remember that the Sci-Fi Channel (as it was spelt then) was rudely ripped away from us years ago, with no news as to whether or not it would ever be returned.

Some of the signature shows moved to M-Net Action but this hasn't delivered the same experience or feeling for space junkies, who want to keep in touch with every bit of current sci-fi programming on a channel that mirrors the trippy world of the shows completely.

We've been scooping for futuristic news from Universal to find out what's what with it and it turns out there's a one-in-four-chance that'll it'll be back on our screens in the next year or so.

Word from the network is that they're currently in negotiations with DStv to introduce one of the other four channels. These are the channel options:

13TH STREET Universal

An action and suspense channel focusing on crime and thriller series and movies. (Yeah, yeah, there's lots of this on everywhere already.)

Diva Universal

A channel dedicated to women. Shows include: The Ellen Degeneres Show, Oprah, Bold and the Beautiful, The Housewives of Orange County, Top Chef and Style By Jury. (All shows available across other channels already).

STUDIO Universal

A speciality movie channel with movies from the NBC stable, as well as companions shows and specials such as interviews, insights into movies and themed nights. (Sounds quite good but not nearly as cool or different enough to beat the ...)

SyFy Channel

A channel dedicated to all science fiction shows. Interesting to note: it officially changed name from Sci-Fi to SyFy in the US in July 2009 and changes name round the rest of the world this year. Just in time for us to get it too. Out of the four, it's definitely our top choice as the new addition. A link to the US site with more about it: SyFy.

They won't bring back SyFy, they will in all likelihood bring the Diva Universal crud instead.
 
I'm not sure if i want the scifi chanel back, it was one of my favourites, but i remeber it started to suck with the repeats of really old program over and over again (like the rest of DSTV), but aperently on the web it looks like the current schedule is ok

Its like that with all channels. First 6 months I thought dstv was awesome, afterwards... nothing new to watch. SyFy will be good for a few months.
 
From the list of their programmes I think it should be called the Ghost Hunters channel. As long as they can provide me with Stargate I have no need to complain.
 
is this not a move to squash ODM's entrance into the market by securing a channel that many people want? they used to have it, but dropped it, but now that ODM is finally in the mix, they conveniently start talking about a popular and requested channel?? hmmmm

Why can't ODM bid for this channel?

This is a huge deal to many people, i don't care what multichoice said about the channel either with regards to popularity.
 
So what happens to shows like Midsomer, Poirot, Foyle's War etc, will they be replaced with more yank crap?
 
Big question is which bouquet it goes to...If it goes to the full one, it's not going to make any difference to me, being on Select 1. I'm certainly not going to fork out R500+ a month for the endless DStv repeats. Would rather take out a contract at a decent video store and hire everything I want to watch.
 
Chances are it will be the Diva one and the Universal Select channel, I am not holding thumbs it is Scyfy as it's been what 5-6 years?

Im rottenly ill with flu,i wish i could just lie in bed and enjoy the syfy channel.
What is wrong with multichoice, everybody i know asks about the syfy channel and now uncapped internet is so cheap......
 
Guys is it worth getting HD-DSTV ? or a time wast after awhile when everything starts repeating after a few months?
 
The thing about intl channels we get, its not the same as the US versions. I've stayed in the US and what we get here are often watered down channels. For example the Discovery channel we see is not what they see. Mythbusters is a good example. In the US it has US commentary but the one we se has some Pom Scotsman commentating. Anyone else noticed that?

depends on the season the older seasons have the british dude and the latest season has the american, not sure if its the same in the states
