Hi

Does ADSL architecture support symmetrical connections? Or is wireless the only way to go if you want follow this route? I am sure 512 can be symmetrical but how about 4meg?

AFIK telkoms ADSL does not support symmetrical. You would need a Diginet connection for symmetrical.

Telkom does sell SDSL in certain places where the exchanges support it. It is designed to be a low cost alternative to diginet but the Telkom people that I spoke to don't think it works very well.

Coverage is still quite poor and there are major problems with delivering the required speeds due to the copper quality.

The cost of Telkom's fiber services are gradually coming down and are already within reach for small businesses. Fiber could be a good option.

My dad had a pretty decent 2Mbps SDSL connection to the University of Stellenbosch via Telkom - long before 4Mbps ADSL was available. He cancelled it since 4Mbps ADSL became much cheaper than the 2Mbps SDSL.

I'm posting every now and then in their Technical section, but I'm not actively involved with their development any more.

Why are you interested in SDSL kind of solutions?
