Due to erratic GPRS only and no broadband, I need to know how to sync PIM data from Thunderbird+Lightning OR Evolution with a smartphone.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 but will upgrade when I can get to an adsl connection later this year. Or Mint 14.

I am using a Nokia but will buy either Android or Blackberry.

Which works best over USB or Bluetooth?

Have you tried Funambol? Their open source version is here and they also have commercial offerings available.

I had some success in the past using syncml over USB or Bluetooth, syncing between Evolution and a Nokia phone (but, this was like in 2007).

At the time, I was using multisync with the syncml plugin. The successor to multisync is opensync.

You may rather want to look at syncevolution, such as this howto

I have tried it before and it did not work with either my E63 or E5. I am in the market for a new phone and the soolution here may help me make the right decision. Integrating systems seems to be a small challenge. :)
