I work from a desktop (Windows 7) at work
When seeing customer's I use a laptop (Windows 7)
I have a smartphone (Android)
Thinking of getting a tablet (probably Android but maybe iPad) for when I travel and only need access to the Internet & e-mail

Using different hardware is a problem keeping selected files /folders, e-mails synchronised!

Does anyone know of sofware that will do this?

I also do not want to keep the mobile operators, Telkom in business using cloud solutions!

In terms of email, use the IMAP protocol. It may be a tad slower, but you get used to it. The advantage is that you have the same view across all devices.

Swap to Gmail/Googleapps

Docs you can keep synched with something like Dropbox easily enough for multiple devices

I have looked at IMAP, but it only appears to work with incoming mail and not outgoing mail!

How can I keep my outgoing mail in sync between devices?

if you route your corporate e-mail through a free Gmail account, it will also retain all of your outgoing e-mails.
