Syrinx has a solution for providing VoIP on Wireless LAN. A cellphone using WLAN can make calls via the company PABX. Calls to other cellphones in the WLAN are locally switched (not via GSM network). When a user moves out of range from WLAN, the call is handed over seamlessly to GSM network.

I dont see how this is possible unless you are MTN or Vodacom. You are going from an IP / SIP connection to a Packet Switched network, only the Mobile providers can do this.

Very possible

This is how it happens in a NUTSHELL.

You need the following
- an asterisk box with TDM cards and everything installed and running
- a soft client that will run on your smart phone like Nokia E-series

Now the handover happens in this manner

When a user is on a GSM call as he moves into wi-fi range of a certain thresh-hold , the soft client on the GSM will register with the asterisk box.Once that is done the asterisk box via its TDM trunk will call back the Nokia phone via SIP and the thin client running on the cellphone will simple run a simple script to end the GSM call.

Last year I used to review QA for a company with this kinda solution.

Cool, but complex. These types of solutions will hopefully find their way into the firmware of the device, not nice calling from some or other piece of software.

Yes that will happen with 4G I dint know how many years from now and infact cellular companies are leading this because if the dont they will suffer the same fate that AT&T in the US is facing.

For instance AT&T telephone service now competes against itself.

They have the regular PSTN phone service and now also offer VoIP over the same copper wires that provide PSTN .

The limitation now is wi-fi coverage and QOS unintelligent access points
