The electronic calculator killed slide rules (no r) not the computer, and paper-based calculations aren't dead - they were seriously injured by the school system making multiplication tables redundant - but are still very much in use...

I know 4 people who own noteepads. When they first got them theycouldn't get them out fast enough to do something. Nowadays you rarely see them, and 2 of them don't even carry theirs aound any longer....

I still carry a notepad around when I'm working . . . and a pen.

I will never buy one! if you have a notebook book and smartphone why on earth would you need a tablet? waste of money if you ask me

If there is one lesson I've learned it is never say never when it comes to tech. Especially not technology you haven't used yourself. I dissed the kindle until I held one in my hand. It is bloody amazing! Tablet the same. You get tablet netbook combos for under R5000 that knocks the socks off the iPad for instance... Yes it is a combo but these things are usage specific at the moment. A time will come when you won't have to choose either or...

Thats is because iPad can not work without a PC/Laptop. You go and try and buy one and turn it on without having a PC. The people that would use a tablet instead of a PC can not do so as they still have to have both. Untill that problem is resolved it will not, wait it can not replace the PC.

lol. this is like saying that a new breed of kiwi fruit is going to kill peaches.

looking at the use case, not the actual technology, you will realize, if anything, tablets will kill books, magazines and newspapers the same way that computers killed slide rulers and paper based calculations.

The only scenario where a tablet will take the place of a computer is where someone had an overpowered, under-used computer in the first place to do what a tablet can do.

And lets not forget, the tablet is speaking to computers in the cloud anyway.

It's another format
Computers never killed calculators, although they did spread the sales a bit thinner. Same with Tablets. Different form factor, different application, PC sales may slow but that will be countered by the higher uptake in IT worldwide. Demand wont be less for either in future IMO.

It is quite an effort to play Super Mario Bros on a tablet using a NES emuator. That's 6 buttons.

Having said that, it is quite exciting to see the tablet market growing and how the its uses are expanding!

Tablets and PCs are very different things. I have 2 desktops and a laptop and I still love my first generation ipad and use it daily. The ipad is perfect for browsing infront of the tv as there is no boot up time required and it has a million other uses that a laptop or desktop just isnt suited for. I also used my ipad extensively while traveling in Europe recently - it is light enough to fit in my camera bag, so I carried around all day and whipped it out to read articles I stored using Instapaper (awesome app) - something I would never have been able to do with even the lightest netbook.

Saying that, the current tablets available will never replace my gaming pc or even the laptop I use for word processing, etc. They are simply aimed at different use cases.
