Having had my checked in luggage tampered with and the contents reduced, I can't but agree with the warning.

Taiwan people warned to avoid travel to South Africa

CNA

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Consumer Protection Commission under the Cabinet warned the public yesterday to avoid traveling to South Africa because violent crime has continued to escalate in that country.

Liu Ching-fang, a section chief of the commission, said that the commission received a travel advisory from the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stating that social order in South Africa has been deteriorating, and that armed robberies have been reported in areas with large concentrations of people of Chinese origin.

Tourists passing through O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg often complain that their cameras, mobile phones, laptops and other valued possessions were stolen, Liu said.

She added that foreign tourists are being targeted at the airport, followed and mugged by armed criminals, and that some of the robbers are even posing as policemen to stop their victims.

Other governments that have also issued travel warnings to their citizens about travel to South Africa suspect that some personnel working in the airport might be tipping off criminals waiting outside the airport about tourists who declare valuables and cash.

Combine it with this article from IOL, and worrying trend is starting to develop. It seems that SA is not the tourist attraction of choice, as the government would like to portray.

South Africa is one of the most unsafe places in the world.
Dont come here

You cant really say that. it is.

You try walking outside at night. Would you even?

Really, where do you get your stats from?

Obviously some places are a risk to go to at night, but I have no problem going outside in the area where I live at night.

its based on reference....

And the reference is?

What are you? Pro South African?
Just because your area is safe all is right with the world and everyone else is doing fine?
Do I need to show you stats?

borak its not that bad man

yes there is a ton of violent crime but its not like we lock ourselves up at night and sit by the door with guns waiting for the millions of criminals to attack

the way you make it sound is we all live in total fear and could be attacked at any minute

its bad but not iraq bad man

Yes only in the smaller towns where live is still peaceful ie George.
You come across drunkards thats about all, but you obviously do not
venture into the high density areas, where murder, rape, assault is rife
even in George.

It's lekker in the country! Haven't you guys heard all the "Take a sh'ot left" (wtf ever that means) ads on the radio? They even have Aussies talking lekke SA lingo. Ironically, you don't hear them say things like "gimme your wallet and cellphone or I'll kill you".

Crime is "not that bad" until you become a victim, trust me.

Up until the mid-90s Taipei was Cape Town's "sister city". Ironic that they now inform their citizens to avoid SA. Viva 2010! Viva!

What violent crime? Why doesn't the ANC govt know anything about this?

Blatant racism, they are trying to trigger an international incident

Import tax

The police have already told us that there are NO criminal gangs operating from O.R. Tambo. so this article must be lying!

Other governments that have also issued travel warnings to their citizens about travel to South Africa suspect that some personnel working in the airport might be tipping off criminals waiting outside the airport about tourists who declare valuables and cash.

Those are the friendly tourist guides supplied by the ANC government to help tourists acclimatise to life in South Africa.

I'd love to hear yaysayer Capetownguy's response to this.

The criminals and thieves will have a month-long feast in 2010, with all those rich tourists coming in.
