Taking a long view has paid off...

Congrats!

Is this your only savings vehicle or do you have RA etc. as well?

I check once a quarter. There were days that you "lost" like R20k. Satrix is the trust old tortoise in my investment portfolio. The best part.... negligible fees. Those eat away at savings.
The more it grows the less that affects you, I recently had a day where my value dropped an entire years worth of living expenses!

Fortunately I had some free cash in my brokerage account so I used it to make a little more profit.

Oh and big congrats to the OP!

Good ****ing grief, I've lost more than R20 000 from November 2015 to February 2016.

So around 10 years back I invested my first 200 bucks in Satrix EFTs. Steadily increasing it as I had spare cash.

Today it crossed the R1 000 000 mark... totally freaked out :)

Just spotted your post. Well done. I started when I got my first pay cheque. I lost the discipline to keep increasing it. Consequently I lost all momentum.

Thanks man. I know talking money is a bit of a taboo but I wrote this to hopefully spur okes on. Even in times of austerity we must save.

I have Top 40 and Swix shares only. All reinvested. Never touched a cent. I live very humbly but travel a lot. Pay increases and tax refunds small as they were went into the funds.

See my tips to boost your eBucks thread. I save wherever I can :)

Thank you for sharing your story. From humble beginnings have come big things. Hopefully with compound interest and maintaining your momentum, you'll cross the two million mark and much more in years to come.

My good missus and I have been actively saving for our children's education (hopefully only for tertiary if I have to touch this, else it will be our gift to them later in life) and another for ourselves (call it our pocket money if we're fortunate enough to make retirement).

We weren't as aggressive or disciplined as you have been, but over the past 2 years or so we have changed a gear or two. Every year around this time we up the amounts in our respective debit orders. Like you say, using a debit order to force save just as you get paid, is a smart way to save and get used to living without it.

Congrats!

I cashed in my Satrix in December, put it in my vehicle and home loans - waiting the marketing out before deciding to what to do further. Only about half yours though.

Congrats to the OP. I'm interested to know this as well. How has your savings changed with the advent of TFSA? That is if it has changed at all.

Thank you.

I am an engineer so I like to follow rules and algorithms.

I have a multi platform portfolio. Have my own RA and work pension fund. Satrix on the side. And a few properties for passive income. I have a separate savings account for my kids education as well.

I only buy things I need (on sales) and when I do so - I buy it on my credit card for the ebucks and settle full amount owing. I don't earn a massive income, donate to a lot of needy causes and hope that good karma shines back on me.

On an aside, this year was the first time I bought a newish car... lol. I usually maintain and drive them till they are uneconomical to do so anymore.
