Fiddled around in kara last night and came out with a nice chest from nightbane.
Still have some blues which i need to get rid of, and i will be picking up the darkmoon vengeance card on Monday.
my char here
My def and avoidance stats make me uncrittable and uncrushable, so i am getting there.
What would you guys suggest as the next badge purchase for me? And where can i get some decent shoulders or legs from? T4? Curator legs?
Also how is my socketing looking? any improvements to be made there?
What is a good dodge % to have on a pally considering a great deal of our aggro comes from damage caused by blocking?
Also when an attack is "blocked" on your screen, does that mean it was totally avoided? or does it take the damage caused by the blow less the block value?

thanks =)

Can't access your char but you have 104% avoidance without holy shield to claim that uncrushable? ;)

Block works as follows - it calculates the total damage the blow would have done. Removes an amount based on armor negation.
Then this number is for example something like 4k.
Block value determines how much of this final total gets absorbed by your shield and the rest u still take in the gut :P

*However blocking some value pisses the boss off to no end, especially with pally aggro based on some block..so block is your friend yes :D

I'll look at your toon when i get home and determine what more you could want. PVP shoulders are handy till you can get some tier loving - stam, spelldmg and some resi for crit reduction if you need some

nah - but i thought you had to have 102.4% with holy shield for uncrushability??

what is a good dodge % to have then? assuming having too much block or more block than dodge means you take way more damage?

Ofcourse, but if you say you are uncrushable I assume you reached ~103% without holy shield Which is not entirely impossible. T4/t5 gear can do that :P

Dodge is the easiest stat to stack up on really next to stam. So don't worry about it reaching excessive heights. Your threat at t5 levels will start coming more from your spelldamage than your block.

Ideally your parry dodge and block would be as high as possible but thats the ideal :P Realistically Pally gear focuses more on continued spelldmg threat output than pure avoidance so don't fret if you have too little dodge early. Tanking kara with 10% 10% 20% is totally doable ( can't see your stats as I am at work :( )

Take a look at my char in prot and you can compare t5 to your t4 and gem options.
Get the crafted belt if you dont aready have it, quite nice stats.
It wil cost you about 1k to get it crafted but well worth the purchase as outside tier gear there is not a lot of tankadin drops till late end game.

Checked your toon out. Way overgeared for kara as is :) Farm the place till u replace the blues and then go kill moar stuff.

You already have fantastic boots so next i'd go for the badge leggings then chest. Those things are built of win totally.

I *was* thinking of going for the 100 badge pala legs and the 100 badge "stoic guardian" chest, purely because the avoidance on that chest is so much more than the avoidance on the pala chest. Thoughts?

Am i able to tank prince with my current gear do you think?
Also, i am in two minds about that shattered sun necklace - it has nice stam but buggerall else worth having - the maiden necklace seems to be much better for avoidance?

@Dusk - nice char, i do have that belt =) its an awesome one, doesn't seem to be much better out there until the T5 instances.

@Roosta - Nice gear, i see you have a T6 item there.

Nah go for Pally gear and look sexy :)

The SSO necklace is nice for the dodge factor if you are exalted with aldor. Best neck choices for you otherwise are between the badge one and the Maiden neck.

You could tank prince with the current gear setup. Just keep holy shield up for that phase2/3 trainsition and watch how u block just about every blow that lands :D

Dusk (T4/5+) and my Pala (T6+) are good comparisons for what you should aim for.

As you can see Dusk has a lot of block, which is awesome for Murlocs (SSC) Dragonhawks (ZA/TK) and trash in MH. After that you want to stack pure avoidance (mainly dodge - parry is more expensive). Also you want to get a better libram for single target threat: [Libram of Divine Purpose], so work towards getting 102.4% avoidance without [Libram of Repentance]. (PS You can swap librams during combat)

Also, [Chestguard of the Stoic] is only 75 Badges, but I'm so close to getting [Shattrath Protectorate's Breastplate], which is better for single target threat.

One last thing, get the Mgt HC trinket [commendation of kael'thas]. One of the best tanking trinkets! You can also buy the [Darkmoon Card: Vengeance]

i have three darkmoon furies sets atm, one in me bags and two on AH =)
will be picking up the card when i get home - only thing is i will lose 28 def rating from the trinket it will be replacing....(which sucks).

I've ensured that my gear is not dependant on trinkets, which leaves me open to swap them as I please. Need threat? I add a SD trinket. Need more HP? Change both to Commendation and Vengeance or Spyglass for a lot more HP.

if i had the T4 shoulders i wouldnt have to worry about the trinkets, unfortunately my guild isnt on 25 mans yet and Pugs on bloodhoof suck =(

The best advice anyone can give a tankadin is this...don't throw away any gear that you get from Kara or beyond. The reason for this is simple...paladins are a support class, and as a result sometimes when we get a nice new item that is better than our old one we put it on and suddenly we're crushable again. So what do you do then? Well you either have to use your old item until you can find something else to make up the difference, or go through your bag of old gear and mix and match until you reach all your avoidance and defense goals :)

I strongly recommend the mod ItemRack, as it lets you swap out between gear sets with one button. I currently carry 5 sets with me at all times :P

Why you may ask? Well I believe that any tankadin who wants to be taken seriously should have at least 2 sets: a trash set, which focuses on spell damage, hit rating (not spell hit, but normal hit for AS and RD), block rating and block value (but it must still be 490 def/102.4 avoidance, in case you forget to switch on a boss :P ) and a boss set, which emphasises stamina and pure avoidance.

And before you ask, yes we do generate a lot of threat from blocking, but ask yourself this: on a boss fight who hits for 5 - 10k per hit, would you rather block, say 500, or avoid the damage completely? See my point? :P

Tankadin's have it easy in Kara in terms of threat because most enemies are undead, and thus Exorcism provides some extra threat and a single target pull. But in general, for Kara and heroics you should aim for 200 spell damage, around 250 or so for Gruul and Magi, 300-350 for T5, 400-450 for T6, and close to 500 for Sunwell :)

The basic requirements to main tank Kara are 490 def, 102.4% avoidance with HS, 13.5K health (for Prince specifically) and around 14K armor, so I would say you can definitely do all that in your current gear :)

As for gear, I would recommend the 75 badge chest over the 100 badge one, T4 shoulders when you get there, 35 badge bracers, 100 badge legs, 60 badge ring (the dodge one). Further, I would use the SSO necklace on trash and the Maiden neck on bosses. The badge neck isn't all that good IMO. I would also pick up the Commendation from heroic MgT as was already mentioned, and use that for bosses and the DM Card for trash for extra threat.

Gem wise...if you ever want to compete with a warrior tank in terms of health, +12/+15 stam gems are the ONLY way to go IMO. Sure you can put other gems in while gearing up, but when you get to the good stuff that you're going to keep for a while, stam is the way to go.

And lastly, enchants. 150 health on chest, 20 spell damage on trash gloves (T4) and 2% threat on boss gloves (Maiden), Nethercleft on legs, and Boar's Speed on boots. Oh, and 18 stam on shield :)

Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask :P

Subject: Prot paladin itemization problem: 3.0 / Wrath

All the prot paladin items on the tier 4-6, and the badge paladin tank accessories have had all their Int removed. http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/news/2008/september/paladin_tier_4.png

I also know paladins will still be using mana in Wrath / 3.0. What on earth am I going to be tanking with? Fumes?? Two spell casts and I'm oom. And for argument's sake, let's say I want to solo mobs (whereby Spiritual Attunement is no longer applicable). A few judgements and holy shield slam, and I'm oom.

So are we getting mana from Sta and Str now???

I guess I'm going to have to respec ret to be able to get to 80, because I really don't want to have to drink my way there XD.

With all the changes taking place in the upcoming patch, the gear has been modified to better suit the classes needs. The Protection Paladins will function very well with changes made to their current tier equipment.

the changes look good to me, when will we see this stuff implemented? when they release wrath or sooner?
