Anyone have any experience with tarred driveways?

I'm thinking of doing this at my place as my existing driveway is slightly irregular and the paving has aged quite a bit.

What are the pro's and con's?

Concrete with blue stones. A bit expensive but lasts a lifetime and doesnt sink.

When you say heat, is it a problem in terms of parking a car or walking on it?

Reason for considering Tar is that I assume its quite cost effective.

Got a pic? I'm struggling to picture this.

assuming he means laying down some concrete to level the ground, and then throwing those concrete mix pebbles as a layer.

Personally i'm a fan of paving. But not that cheap, best price i got was about 250/square - plain grey bevel, site clearance, supply and install (was about 60squares)

Whoooa!! That's hellishly expensive. I just had 115 squares done at R155 a pop, charcoal bevel including taking out a couple of trees and shrubs. Supply only is about R95 a square.

source/supplier? - thats a fantastic price!

In my case, it was quite a lot of leveling, removal of concrete etc. Called about half a dozen places and nobody came close to my quote. Work was great, no complaints. Entirely painless process (and in building work this is an accomplishment on its own :)

That's a good price.

I wouldn't suggest tar because of maintenance issues and it cannot be fixed easily whereas paving can be lifted and replaced.

It would also increase the property value as tar wouldn't. Please advise on the sq meters of the surface and the price you were quoted for tar for interests sake.

Only advantage of tar as far as I recall is that it's cheap.. But maintenance is a biaatch and if the surface isn't prepared well and your area usually has weed issues then expect to retar the surface. Heat is a problem too..

Paving wise cobbles are awesome

Sorry, I didn't get a price per say, but was told that its roughly half the price of paving. Not sure if this is accurate because paving also varies quite a bit from dirt cheap to crazy expensive.

I was thinking of doing the same on the gravel road leading to our gate. How much would a dual road cost about 1000m in length if you do tar?

Hmmm.. Assuming a 6m wide "road".. at 1000m..

You're at 6000sqm.

One price I've seen so far is R60 per sqm, so you're looking at around R360000.

I think I remember some figure of R12Bar per KM but that could be for Highway and done as a highway would be done.

Where do you guys get such good pricing, I was once quoted R400 a sqm for a minimum of 10sqm. The area I wanted paved was about 5sqm. Told the guy to heave off as I don't want to pay R4000 for that. I've not done any other quotes since though.

Looks like I'm the only guy with a positive tar driveway experience. Granted I only had it about 2.5 years before moving. Maintenance consisted of zapping whatever grass/plants would take hold with some weed killer. Still looked fine when I moved. And I recall it costing about half of what paving would have.
