It has also invested heavily in five global submarine cable systems. One of them is the Sat-3/Wasc/Safe submarine cable which connects Europe with Africa and Asia. Access to this cable is seen as critical in breaking Telkom's dominance of international telecom services from SA.

This would be so f*cking cool! Tata already have rights to use SAT3 so they don't have to try and force Telkom to relinquish some of it to them. Altough I bet Telkom will force Tata to build a new ZA cable landing point. I suggest we all send around a hat and collect money for Tata's own landing point. We could hand over a donation cheque in a glitzy media event ... would make Telkom look like total fools

So far, all the so called "competitors" like iBust and Scumtech have towed the price line and some, like Vodascum have gone one step further and actually outdone Hellkom.

I'm not holding my breath !

Not surprising, seeing as Telkom holds Vodacom by the proverbials... :p

Always safer to go for a hybrid of local & foreign investment, which is sort-of what's being done with the Scotch Mist SNO...

I dunno gooku...the way Telkom went was kind of like a trickle of forex into the country and a river of money out of the country into $BC's pockets...

Lets hope Tata can spell "social responsibility"

Hi Lewstherin
It is a total different game now,
When SBC invested in Telkom ,it was an absolute monopoly.

SNO will face many competitions.most of them utilises newer technology.TATA will have to realy earn their money. not leeching like Telkom &SBC

Q: How does one tame a 500 pound gorilla ?

A:How about finding a 900 pound gorilla to do the job !

TATA maybe the 900 pound gorilla we need.:D

Telkom turns +- R50 billion vs TATA R89 billion !

if you're only a measly 180 pounds do you care if you're being raped by a 500 pound gorilla or a 900 pound one?

In this type of situation,The "McGuyver" solution would be

Get the 900 pound gorilla to rape the 500 pound one instead

;)

Telkom turns over R50bn? I thought it was around 18

Well Telkomonopoly's profits increase per second, so it must follow that their turnover does the same :D

<added>
This sparked an idea for one of RPM's press releases - what if we highlighted the amount of profit that Telkomonopoly makes off of SA citizens & netizens on a per second, per minute & per hour basis?

I'm talking about 3 lines added in somewhere in the press release, for shock factor - bcos SA people really need electro-shock if they're gonna vote Telkomonopoly the best telecoms co in the world.
