I have taken a liking to the look of the Tata Xenon and was wondering what people in this forum who have experience with doing 4x4 related things thinks of it?

Made me think that it might not be such a bad idea!

I can't speak specifically for the 4x4, but I have owned a Tata vehicle previously. The car itself was okay - very functional, but then again you aren't paying for a BMW so that isn't what you will get.
The car itself isn't where I experienced problems though...
After-sales service was exceptionally shocking. Minor repairs under warranty took 3 weeks, a major repair took nearly 4 months (this was at the Edenvale dealership/service centre). During that particular 4 month period (there was more than one), the service centre consultants told me each day that my car would be ready "tomorrow". After 4 weeks of making arrangements for lifts to and from work, I was forced to call head office and make the dealership give me a loan car.
There is a lot more I could say about Tata SA's shoddy after sales service, but I'm honestly just too lazy today to recount all my experiences.

So in conclusion - vehicle is fine and will serve your needs, but if anything goes wrong you will experience great frustration.

I don't really like the Tata, as the cheap imports go I am more in favour of a Mahindra or GWM Florid.

i owned a tata lsi hatch and can honestly say it was a very decent car, never had any issues and thankfully it was very reliable. sold it this year after having it for 3\4 years. i actually still miss it at times especially in traffic in the cdb.

there aftersales people are useless i'm afraid but then again so are most of the other brands...

servicing is cheap
