Tax hikes coming

missing trees 'n forests and shrubs, but where else in the world do 3% of the population account for approx. 75% of all personal and company tax collected? :(

If you are going to quote someone then you will do well to take note of the part they highlighted in their post. I was referring to the highest tax rate in the world.

They can kiss my ass on this one.

Well this is going to be an interesting battle. ToxicBunny vs SARS. I think I know who the winner of this one will be.

The key word is 'unsustainable'. I wonder what plan B is once the tax base has been sucked dry or most likely packed and gone?

I still reckon the system of tax collection is flawed. A better system is this...

Everything my business earns should be paid directly into the SARS account. Government should then purchase Mercs, BMW's, a R250 000 bicycle for the police, a R6.5 million website for the city of Durban, a few parties for government bigwigs, a couple of stethoscopes for government hospitals at R600 000 each, then take their VAT, license fees, any other fees due, pay the unemployed to sit at home, etc. Then if there is any change they should just deposit it in my cheque account.

Do the writers of these articles just suck things out of their thumbs to suit their need?

You could live in Benin! Even the "utopia" of Australia goes up to 45%...

Now let us not compare what they get in OZ for their 45% and what we get. Medical for a start would make matters clear then we do not even want to mention 'Schooling', 'Policing' and "Public services".

No, no, let's mention it as that is exactly what this thread is about. The proposed increase in taxes would be used to serve this precise purpose - social security fund and national healthcare.

As for your latter points it would prove to be a fruitless argument. I can state that their is absolutely no problem with our public schools for example and you will just come back and say how useless they are.... people will only see what they choose to see.

And then for good measure let's just add to the argument the fact that none of those other countries which have equally high tax rates have the remnants of apartheid, and the damage it did, to try and mend!

Lancelot you'd do well to read the Financial Mail's cover story from two weeks ago. It's a very informative article about how the NHI will be a complete disaster (not surprising considering the party in power!) and unsustainable.

Excellent point you have made. Plus, one must be sure to make the distinction between the effective tax rate and the total tax rate. I am sure the writer obviously refers to the total tax rate.

Those are just income tax rates. How do we fare with all the other taxes we pay?

I personally think we should just kill the poor and feed them to the rest of the poor.

I have read the article. And your points would be more easily accepted if it were not for the obvious reason that any conclusion you are likely to draw from any article you read is based on one, highlighted, point you make.... you will find in most articles on the matter you will get those who say it will work and those who are adamant it won't. Which side you believe is usually based on what you want to believe. Of course most white people want to believe that the ANC can't do anything!

I am sure the writer is obligated to state this then.... but then again apparently not as most journalists tend to be able to get away with publishing any old propaganda crap.

the fact that none of those other countries which have equally high tax rates have the remnants of apartheid, and the damage it did, to try and mend!

The age old story, we would obviously require another 14 years of ANC rule to realise that that Apartheid excuse are used up dry. By then Sir will still try to convince everyone about how good things are and that we must still blame APARTHEID.

CURRENTLY I DO NOT BLAME APARTHEID, I BLAME THE ANC AND THEIR MASS FRAUD AND SELF ENRICHMENT SCHEMES.

We read it in the news everyday, obviously not in the papers Sir reads daily.

I was not the one that started the comparisons and should not really be perpetuating them as you shouldn't compare different countries as they have different needs! One country may use the taxes to make their cities look pretty while others have housing to build for the unhoused and supply basic resources to those who were denied for years.....

What other taxes are you referring to? I have not personally lived in Aus (thank God!) but as far as I am aware they have GST at 10% (as opposed to our VAT at 14%) and CGT at the same rate as ours of 30%.

Propaganda? So you believe they have another agenda. What do you feel is in fact the writer's agenda?

OK, just did a little more reading out of interest.... Aus :

Medical Levy

A Medicare levy (National Health Insurance) is also charged at a flat 1.5% rate. If you earn more than $70,000 (for singles) or $140,000 (for couples) and do not have private health insurance you are liable for an extra 1% of your taxable income.

Rates?

Local governments are typically funded largely by taxes on land value (council rates) on residential, industrial and commercial properties.

In addition, some State governments levy tax on land values for investors and primary residences of high value.

Social security tax?

The compulsory nature of Australian Superannuation means that it is sometimes regarded as being similar to social security taxes levied in other nations. This is more frequently the case when comparisons are being made between the tax burden of respective nations.

Fuel tax

The excise tax on commonly used fuels

Luxury Car Tax....Inheritance tax...Fringe Benefits Tax

Yeah, so pretty much the same....

Income tax in Japan on a salary of $2000 is US$ 200 and health insurance is $100. Of course that $100 health insurance actually pays for world class hospitals but hey.....

Oh wow, I was waiting for the race card to be played BUT the triple-score Apartheid card? Bing, bing, bing! Triple score, Thread closed.

Oh, ah, but wait one moment. Just how does Apartheid explain how a country such as ours can afford a luxury such as paying the unemployed to sit at home?

Lancelot, you will find that the main concern of the people in this thread is that the poor are breeding at a much quicker rate than jobs and nee tax payers are being created. A welfare state in South Africa is not sustainable in the medium to long term. You are getting caught up in the details and ignoring the bigger picture. Is the government going to keep increasing tax rates until all we have is a poor class? What other options to continually subsidise the poor are there?
