Tax return 2009

How much did you claim if I may ask? Iirc there's an automatic audit threshold beyond a certain amount claimed - but it changes from year to year. Aside from the normal point accrual system.

Eish :o

Let's just say I'm suppose to get a very nice sum back :)
I'm not earning as much to qualify for an automated Audit I think. I might be wrong though.

And when you claim Medical expenses (not covered by medical aid).

No clue - this will be the first year I'm claiming medical.

You serious?

If that is the case then I need to get Payroll to make sure they deduct the correct damn amount, and Won't pay for anything cash no more

Yeh - they told me that in April this year, everything over R10k is audited. 2008 was my third year being audited.

Why so much? Travel or medical claims?

edit/ I realise I sound like a tax inspector...:) what I mean is, if you claim substantially every year because of travel claims, why not increase your travel allowance portion of your salary (it is just structuring). You effectively decrease your monthly PAYE, instead of waiting for a big claim after submission.

I guess some people like the "bonus" idea.

Pit how did they contact you about the audit?
Last year I got audited and because I hardly ever check my snail mail, it took the 3rd threatening letter before I responded. I had assumed they'd contact me by email to let me know there's a message on efiling for me (like they do for the IT34).

But must say once I emailed the requested docs it took about a few days before I got my cash back.

Not true. Many people claim medical expenses because they don't have any medical aid. I claimed some last year and wasn't audited.

Yes, you are right. My medical claim was partly responsible for getting more than 10k back, but I think the audit was because of the "more than 10k" and not the medical claim. But for the audit they only wanted proof of my medical expenses.

Not always possible, I'm a contractor, and claim back what ever I can at the end of the year :)

Anyone know if you can claim car mods, such as exhausts, intakes, etc... as vehicle expenses?

UPDATE:

IT34 notice was just posted and I think I know now why there is a audit.

From the automated calculation had figure = X
The IT34 notice now has a different figure due to me = Z

Now Z is about 70% more than wat X was. Almost double the amount I expected.

I'll just upload the documents but I need to go and scan all of them and get them on nice order before I upload them. "Payment will be hold back till the documents have been accessed"

Thing is this: I do travel for work but only on occassion. Thus I don't have a car or fuel allowance. But travel seems to have been increasing lately, Might have to review my package with payroll.

I always get something back due to being over taxed by Payroll. The medical expenses vary from year to year. My wife was in for a rough ride last year and I paid most of the specialists: Some where declined because of it being "Stale" and what not. (This amount is rather big)

Year before last I have no idea why I was audited. Well same with this year but the above example kinda explains the Audit.

I got an e-mail and SMS about the Audit and only now got the IT34 notice.

The attachment is a formal letter addressed to me indicating what they need and so forth.

Pitbull, the trick is to pay the correct amount of tax, as you earn it.
This tax money back thing is absolute rubbish.

I know, but I don't do the payroll. Any which way... to me it's a yearly savings scheme :D

Since the amount almost doubled I'm prepaired to wait a little longer :p

Not quite true. Claimed back R50k over the last 2 years (and got it), no audit.

If you have been audited once, they keep you on their "random" list for 3 years I think

Now that is sad, which means the same thing next year :(

I got audited last year ... but it went quick ... got back around R30k without any hassles.

Just don't cheat on your form man ... then you have no hassles.

Could have changed I guess, or your circumstances are exceptional. My wife worked for them a few years ago (not for long, couldn't stand it :p). Threshold then was R10,000 iirc.

Never, I'm too shyt scared of SARS to even try that :D

It's the damn slep that comes with sending in all the things :(
And the WAIT..... Last year took about 3 months iirc.

To make matters worse, I can't get even 3 numbers on the national lottery draw. But me the FK face is the lucky bastard to get selected for an Audit 2 years in a row......

I must be the unluckiest man alive :(

This seriously sucks. I have all the Docs is the bloody slep that goes with this audit /cry.

The lotto is for those who can't do math :)

Right,

So I have checked, rechecked, double checked and triple checked all the figures and the totals in relation to my supporting docs to make sure I didn’t miss anything. All is 100% in order.

Uploaded my supporting documents just now. So let’s see how long they take this year round :(

I've got a question for those of you that can help.

Not to make a long story longer, i had to resubmit on e-filing as their records were different to mine (2009 season). The first assessment was a rebate to me, according to the IT34. The second assessment i received today, says "reduced second assesment" also a rebate to me, but less by some 15K. My question: Am i reading the ITSA correct, when it shows first assessment + second assessment = total of both assessments owed to me, or does the second assessment over-ride the first assessment. The way it describes i read it, says combine, but now i'm not sure. I will need to do an objection if the second assessment is all i'm going to receive.

Thanks

I'll have to go check mine, but the last figure you get is the amount due to you. The other figures gets canceled out the further down you go.

One sec let me just make 100% sure.

edit:
Just checked. Open the IT34 Reduced assessment

That is the amount you will get. (Due to you)
