Some interesting numbers from http://www.arrivealive.co.za/documents/March_2008_-_Road_Traffic_Report_-_March_2008.pdf:

Minibuses only account for 3% of the vehicles on the road but contribute 10% of the fatalities.
The number of unlicensed minibuses increased 96%

They are however, on the road (sorry about this) all the time, I am not sure that statistic accurately reflects this. They would therefore statistically have more accidents than the average driver?

I know they are hazardous, the point is they are needed at the moment, removing them will create a serious problem. with ref to opening few posts, just because a mans occupation is something you despise, does not mean his death should be rejoiced or welcomed.

Time based is difficult - you might want to rather consider fatality per occupant kilometer. It's the stat that airlines use to justify air travel being so safe.

Something else that is quite interesting in all those numbers is the type of accident - pretty much everything that a taxi does to be a hazard has an accident classification :)

That would be a more accurate representation than ur statistics i agree, which was my minor point...

my main point was the second part of my post, which u ignored.

Not my stats - I don't lie.

As to your second, main, and all important point - I didn't think that it was aimed at me to answer. I hadn't suggested any rejoicing was mandatory, and neither have I ever despised anyone for their occupation. However, I will quite freely admit that I have despised many for the many in which they conduct themselves, whether occupied or not. Yet, even here I have not made any generalised statements unless you take my comments about Acts of God or karma to be such.

ok the stats u provided....is it really necessary to nitpick?

Ur OP sounded like he deserved to die because he was a taxi driver....for no other reason than that? God scored one/ karma turned and gave him what he deserved?

Sounds like thought he deserved to die based on the fact he was a taxi driver.... u even made fun of trying to look for him...

if it was a doctor/fireman you would not have thought like that?

IMO they cause more damage and disruption than how much they contribute to the economy with all the bull$hit violence, protests, shootings, etc etc. I have no sympathy for ANY taxi driver, I hate all taxis, period. Maybe there are some 'good' taxi drivers out there, but I haven't come across them yet.

This morning I thought I did though, when one gave me a gap. Turns out he didn't intentionally give me a gap, he stopped in the middle of the lane (roadworks prevents anyone from pulling over), blocking all the traffic behind him, to drop off someone.

Just to be clear and nitpicky. I started the thread so I think that I have the best insight as to what was in my head. There is no reference whatsoever to any joy or glee. There is no reference to death either. Or whether it was deserved or not. You are quite free to draw your own conclusions as to what would happen to someone who decided to try and cross a raging torrent. I didn't draw any conclusions for anyone.

I didn't make fun of 'him'. I raised the irony involved in raising a search party for someone who is a member of a group of people who are notoriously difficult to find.

You are of course right that I wouldn't have created a thread about karma or Acts of God had it involved a fireman or a doctor. In similar fashion, I didn't mention the cyclist or the baby that were also caught in the flood. That would have been completely tasteless. And, yes, some may have found this thread tasteless - that is their right, but it is also a difference that I am prepared to live with.

By using the karma line u are implying he got what he deserved? If that is not what u meant then i apologise that i misinterpreted it, what did you mean then?

thats exactly what i said in my post, "u even made fun of trying to look for him"???

/me shakes head.

Enough with trying to make this personal. If I meant that I thought that that specific taxi driver got what he deserved I would have said he got what he deserved.

In similar vein - I did not make fun of that specific taxi driver. I 'made fun' of a situation.

Now that I have cleared it up for you I will accept your apology :)

not sure how me trying to understand what u meant is personal? apology is only valid if i misinterpreted what u wrote, since u cant provide a feasible alternative i still assume u meant karma taught him a lesson for being a taxi driver......

anyways, its friday afternoon, and this topic has been exhausted...lets just drink beer instead....first round would be on you though....
