Hi All.
So my Tazz has been jerking a bit when driving from a cold start.
Started happening about a week ago, major service incl. cam belt done 2 months ago.
Feels like misfiring, or water in the fuel.
Could be that i dont allow adequate time to warm (i give it 10-20s).
Am not experienced with older cars.
Thanks

The venerable Tazz 1300 is what you are talking about (I assume), so it is using a carb and not fuel injection. When cold it will need choke to prevent what you are describing. I am not a Tazz 1300 person so I don't know if it is an automatic choke or a manual one, I think its automatic. So depress the accelerator to enable it before starting and blip it again to disable it when it has warmed up. You may need to check if the auto choke is indeed working properly. Carb cars are dogs when cold, especially in colder weather - this is where fuel injection is so great as I was reminded a few weeks ago when I had to drive a classic Toyota Avante 1.6 carb.

I'm assuming it's the 5 speed tazz. It should have an automatic choke which should cut off when it's warmed just like in OldCrowEW's post. Check your carburettor idle, and when your car is parked for a while and you start from cold, let it idle for atleast a minute before driving off to get the oil pumped into all the parts inside the engine, on the longer run this will save you money and fuel because when you drive a car straight from cold you burn more fuel.

Thanks Guy.
Its a 2004 model 130 and i am sure its carb.
Not sure about manual or auto choke - what do you mean by depress the accelerator. Must i pull it back.

What i do normally from a cold start is press pedal so its starts - and warm up revving.
I now started pressing the pdeal before starting - then start - it turns first time. But driving after 10s gives me the jerk.

If it started after a service, it could be because the incorrect type of spark plug was fitted. 95% of the time it is the problem.

On the auto chokes I used, you activated it by quickly pressing the accelerator pedal, and it deactivates the same way. See if warming up the car for a few minutes before pulling away helps. And yes things like spark plugs, ignition leads/rotors and air filters can cause jerking as well. The timing belt could also be a factor if it was not installed correctly and is even a tooth out of sync, but this would not go away when warmer. There are a lot of things that need to be verified. If you can't do it yourself the best bet is a trustworthy mech - difficult to find but not impossible.

Thanks Crow. That what i do currently, maybe i deactivate it too quickly. Has happened in the mornings only, not in the afternoon where i leave the car idle for say 9 hrs and its warm.
Seems to be getting worse though.
Also never happened during winter - I serviced in Springtime.
Will try and leave it longer - otherwise take it back to the mechanic.

Remember to check fuel filter. My tazz was doing a similar thing. I changed the fuel filter and problem was gone.

Maybe its just the cold weather and nothing else. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

Thread necro.

Similar issue with jerking but on the road esp on an incline. Tazz 1.3 5 speed 193K, service done 3.5 months, with cam belt replacement. Fuel pump replaced 2 months ago - was leaking oil - with a aftermarket pump.

Issue cropped up last week after I went over some newly installed rumble strips on the freeway, caught many by surprise doing 100Km up a incline. I felt an immediate dropping of power - it turned out that the cable was knocked loose off a spark plug. The issue of low power up an incline did not completely go away though, it became noticeable with a load of passengers and occasionally driver alone especially when changing up into 2nd gear.

Looking for someone knowledgeable before I go to the service mechanic. It could still be the cable to the plugs, maybe the aftermarket fuel pump? Also wondering if going over the rumble strips at speed could have aggravated sediment in the fuel tank and now the fuel filter could be clogging and causing the issue?

Where can I buy one of these Tazz vehicles. I've been single for a long time now and this would make a good companion.

Or it was not only the spark leads that was knocked loose? Check those vacuum pipes, the Tazz has plenty of those all over the engine, maybe one is loose or leaking.

I'm having the same problem, I have have changed two petrol pumps and filter in less that a two weeks. Service is up to date. I don't know if any one can help me to solve this problem. someone suggested to clean the tank. By the way carburetor was service was done last week.

My issue turned out to be bad cables, there was a small nick. It was normally tucked in and the cable was bent enough to conduct properly. Driving over the rumble strips bumped the cable loose and the gap expanded.
