Teach children decent values - Tutu

Johannesburg - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has called on parents to teach their children better values and for the rich to help the poor.


"If we raised our children with decent values, surely incidents such as the gang rape of the apparently mentally impaired teenage girl in Soweto 10 days ago could never have happened," he wrote in a letter published in the Sunday Times.

He expressed alarm that over the past 18 years, South Africa had moved from an "organised nation of activists for social change", to a nation preoccupied with the accumulation of personal wealth.

He responded to criticism of his statement last year that the wealthy, who were mainly white, should use some of their money to help the poor.

"Surely it is not outrageous to suggest that it would be in the interests of the 'haves' to contribute to a more equitable, stable and sustainable society? If not in cash, then in kind," he wrote.

The poor too, he said, had a responsibility to work for the common good and could make contributions that did not depend on wealth. This included making sure children went to school, joining neighbourhood watches, and helping neighbours.

"Living in filthy and unhygienic conditions is not necessarily a product of poverty," he wrote.

I actually agree with Tutu.

Problem is people tend to think white people are rich and well off, in the current climate a lot of people are just scraping by. Then you look at how much tax one pays in total and it's probably around 65% of what you earn which the government just squanders & steals.

When you have a gvt that says corruption and crime is good ( which they are doing) what the bloody hell do you expect?
When you have a country where criminals as well as children by the way, have more rights than honest law abiding adults, what exactly do you think the outcome will be?
So you and yes tutu I'm pointing a finger at your generation, are responsible for this mess and now you want to try fix it?

This country is riddled with cancer of crime, corruption, chaos and whatever else how in gods name must we teach them decent values when our leaders are preaching otherwise?

What Tutu says is not a bad thing... it would be good to see that put into action
(But I do not think that Tutu himself is any kind of role model).

I think everyone agrees with what tutu said but the question is what tutu and anc did for the past 18 years?
is that they did what they said? -------> NO.

if you want to tell me they are not hypocrisy, then I am rather to be an anti anc madman. :mad:

they fooled South african 18 years already, how long do you still want them to fool you and your offspring?

I would love to jump on the blame the ANC bandwagon, but I'm sorry, but the job of raising children decently has less to do with that government and more to do with parenting.

Of course, it is always tempting to blame the state and forget that the ANC didn't give birth to no children!!

I personally blame bad parenting! It only makes sense.

TO make an example, there are a lot of people who were children during the *****ty apartheid government times, but they turned out to be decent adults...

Let's think before we post. We are adults here...
