Upington - A Northern Cape teacher was fired after she allegedly refused to “adjust” the marks of the principal’s son so that he could pass a subject.

When Arlene Nel refused, she was fired from her job as mathematics and science teacher at Kakamas High School, reported Beeld.

Nel, who was heavily pregnant at the time, was informed in January via SMS by the principal, Karel Afrikaner, that her services were no longer needed.

The governing body knew nothing about this.

'Treated unfairly'

“I was treated unfairly and everyone at school knows what happened. I have a newborn baby without any income,” said Nel, who is a member of union Solidarity.

A union spokesperson said the matter would be referred for arbitration after no agreement could be reached. The case will resume on 24 April.

The principal allegedly asked Nel to adjust his Grade 11’s son’s marks for life sciences so that he could pass. He also wanted her to give the boy the opportunity to repeat all his tasks for the year.

The boy had achieved only 28% in the exam for the subject and need to get 100% to pass. In addition, he also failed maths and physical sciences with marks of 14% and 24% respectively.

Nel said teachers couldn’t adjust marks willy-nilly as it was dishonest and disadvantaged learners.

Neither the principal nor the education department commented on the matter.

Ah, this is a perfect case for the CCMA to get stuck into!

Haha, the principals daughter was in my class in high class, she was the top student though, not a flunker

We had a shocking gentleman as a principal in primary school. The body tried to get rid of him for years. He wanted to close the school down so that he can get severance.

Department Ordered to Compensate Teacher

The Northern Cape has been ordered to compensate a teacher fired for refusing to alter a pupil's marks, the education department said on Thursday.

"Indeed, as the department, we have received the award regarding this case," provincial spokesman Sydney Stander said.

According to a statement by Solidarity, the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) ruled that the department had to pay maths and science teacher, Arlene Nel, compensation for her unfair dismissal.

The former Hoërskool Kakamas teacher was dismissed in January by the school's principal via a text message after she allegedly refused to tamper with his son's marks, the statement said.

"Her dismissal followed shortly after the principal had asked her to adjust his Grade 11 son's marks for life sciences (biology) so he could pass," spokeswoman Moira-Marie Kloppers said.

Nel had taught at the school since January 2012 and her contract was not renewed.

"The ELRC found that the incident indeed impacted on the fact that Nel's contract with the school was not renewed," Kloppers said.

Stander said the department was looking into the matter and would decide on a course of action.
