Care to enumerate? Of course I blame everything on the ANC! You can’t just ‘disagree’ without backing it up. The ANC is possibly even worse than apartheid as a scourge of the country (for black & white).

This. You see it also isn't about the money, its about the discipline in classrooms, teachers have NO discipline at their hands, now I'm not saying beat the little kids to a pulp, just a little smack on ONE child, will set all the others right until there are proper discipline structures in place. Just my 2 c.

It's both. My S/O is a teacher and for what she goes through the pay is just not worth it. She is one of those teachers that never lifts a hand but she has her classes under control but because students are not taught manners at home she will without a doubt have a trouble maker in her class.

Also the work load is not worth the pay as well. People bitch when teachers go on strike but I don't blame a lot of them when they go on strike for more pay. In a typical term my S/O will have athletics, hockey and or netbal, Mr and Miss ....., school plays (etc) and a after school art class for students, She will then spend weekends doing marks that she does not have time to do during the week. (She did marks from 10am to about 9pm last night) At the end of the day after all the over time she still takes home her normal salary. The athletics, hockey, netball, cross country, Mr and Miss...., school plays, etc is not optional, she has to do so many after school activties each term. There are some public schools out there that do pay a bit for extra activities but most do not.
Yeah there is a huge shortage and it will get worse because the salary just isn't worth what they do.

I am one of those people your wife is. But forasmuch as I don't lift a hand, I do walk a thin line. I absolutely hate it when a kid coloured kid comes into my class walking with a gangster's attitude. I pretty much man-handle them out of my class and tell them to enter like a proper person.

My daughter is finishing off her teaching diploma and her first year salary for next year isn't too shabby, plus 13 and 14th cheque, not much to complain about

Not to shabby tends to differ from person to person. If you are male and teaching is all you are qualified for then R12 000 isn't really going to put you in a position to buy any fixed assets ever.

Indeed, but there are schools that pay math and science teachers a bit more than the standard R144k per annum.

If you get in with a private school then things are very different. the only time a teacher gets a raise in the public sector is if they complete a degree (not a diploma, a degree), or a master's degree (don't know what you call it here) otherwise does not matter if you teach art or math, you get the same salary. R9000 after deductions is not bad to live off of if you have no house payment, or rent or a car payment to pay but if you have one or two of those things then a month can get very long. My S/O is one of those dwindling numbers of language teachers. She teaches English as a second language.
