Techies say PS3 chip is revolutionary

Thats Not True

Both the PS3 and XBOX360 are being marketed as these fantastic and powerfull machines, but in terms of real - world computing, the PS3 is even close to an average Athlone 64. Go read the article on megagames.com if you dont believe me. The reasons the games looks so good is actually the graphics card, its quite unbelievable. But the cell as a whole is suppossedly flawed, and so is the proccessor of the X360. You have to ask yourselves why apple abandonned the power pc chip in favour of intel.

PC VS Console

Its all fine and dandy to hear the consoles are getting new chips that is really fast, but are these chips solely for PS's or will they come to PC?
It will be a sad day when they keep the good stuff for consoles to run down the PC.:( . Personally I don't want a console. I believe that that is only for people that don't want the fuss that comes from a PC (installing, upgrading), same like apple. :p
Back on point...The current chip design that is being used for PC now...will they be able to out perform the Cell chip with new updated designs or will PC chip designers also convert to the Cell chip?

Their are servers designed around Cell processors available, so it is possible that a PC addon could appear.

The earlier pics and videos showing the PS3's graphical ability were rendered using only the processor (NVidia's RSX wasn't available)...
So how could the games be looking so good because of the graphics card?

A Blatant LIE!

They are obviously fuding facts to up marketing for the PS3, the fastest Intel Processor would blow that thing right out of the water!

They already had articles about it on TomsHardware and Anandtech. The PS3 doesn't even match up to today's top-ends PC's! Altough it's a well balanced machine it doesn't have a graphics chip that beats the likes of eg. Geforce 7800 or the Intel EE 3.2GHZ processor in their own domain.

They must be thinking of superscalar(all CPU's since 1998 are superscalar), because that thing doesn't even touch a supercomputer, LOL what a BLATANT lie.

Keep in mind consoles are dedicated to play games. Even though PC's are faster with better graphics, they're not as stable and flexible as consoles.

Infact PC's are more flexiable than Consoles by very far.

As for stability, I think if a PC is proparly built it can far uitstrip a console.
My current PC has run for almost 2 years without a format and although it's gotten alot slower(in terms of startup time) it's still working 100%.

Fact is Consoles are inferior to PC's in every respect BUT, they are cheap ;)

Hi guys,
Here's my opinion. I own a top end pc, but I'm also going to get an
xbox 360 quite soon.
The way I see it, they both have their place. I use my pc for FPS and RTS games. My console will be used for racing, fighting, adventure etc.
I also find that the console is much more sociable when the friends come over.
Sitting around a pc is not as much fun as taking eathother out in Burnout revenge or demonstrating out martial skill on DOA4....
Granted, the PC has BF2! (I know BF2 is coming to the xbox 360, but it's an FPS! FPS is for pc!)

One more thing, the PS3 cell processor is capable of alot more than people think,
but developing for it is apparently a nightmare! You have to discover new techniques of developing for it in order to take advantage of it's design.
I commend them on trying to advance the processing power by using a whole new architecture, but guess we'll have to see what happens...

The cell processor much like the custom PowerPC CPU found in the XBOX 360 is very good at running 3D games optimally that has been coded to exploit it's unique memory architecture and seperate execution elements.

Instead of one huge honking CPU in the PC you have little CPU's all over the place in your console feeding each other with data and doing little bits of work but at a very rapid pace.

But it is up to the console programmer to schedule things on time and properly to make sure all the bits and bobs are occupied and busy working otherwise things really slow down.

But this does approach does not work for general purpose computing environment like say running a web browser or an Office package because these programs are all designed with a single CPU in mind and this area is where the Intel and AMD is simply going to spank all their butts.

Interesting, considering that the PS3 doesn't exist yet... Do you have a link?

Consoles have one majopr advantage over PCs - a fixed platform. Game designers do not have to concern themselves with different hardware, and the associated compatibility nightmares - just design the game so it is optimised to the console and volia!

I read somewhere that the Cell was originally intended for workstations and not consoles. I am looking for that article, but can not find it at this stage....
