technical question about overheating

is your fan running all the time? If not, it's not overheating.

But when the light does come on (which hopefully will be never) STOP and call for backup.

Don't be like some women who just keep driving with the lights on ignoring the white smoke and popping noises.

fan runs; not all the time and dosent seem to cool that much the engine; that's why I mentioned its not from the exact same make of car;
temp gets to 101, then it comes on and goes down a bit to 95 or so; but fan tuns off and it climbs gradually again to 103 or so;

this is in heavy traffic; so no cooling that much; if you say at around 120 it overheats then that's what I must look out for;
stop and let it cool down; check for leaks that kind of thing......

in my old sentra you had a gauge that moved at least showing you the engine is getting warmer; and you could begin to hear the popping noises when it got too hot;
also the gauge did move giving you a bit of a warning at least to do something......funny thing was no warning lights even came on when it used to overheat in traffic

Im basing that experience with this car;

I got no warning Its gonna overheat; light comes on; Im F@rked, engine is ruined..... as per my understanding;

why otherwise leave only a light and not 2 lights like a getz; this has nothing; if it comes on say your goodbye to the engine......

so Im trying to judge based on the responses here; that its normal for it to get to 100 via the app readout;
if I didnt have the app theres no way to tell if its even overheating.....

Again, that is not how it works, the light won't come on that late. Just think about it - why would they have put the light in there at all if all it tells you is that your engine is seized? It makes no sense. What you describe your fan doing (and when it turns on and off) is exactly what it is supposed to do.

And as Pitbull said, ±125°C is where a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water will start to boil, 100°C is nothing

edit: go read your manual, it will have a section on this. I'm 99% sure it'll tell you to stop and let it cool, then drive slowly (which means your engine is far from seized) to wherever you can top up with coolant. If the problem persists then you get help

If the fan is switching on and off then it's working as designed and thermostat is controlling it.

You are worrying too much.

Driving too slow can cause even more issues with an overheating engine. If your car starts overheating turn the heater on full blast and drive around 80km/h. Below that the air flow isn't sufficient to cool the engine

This will help absolutely zero if your water pump is gone, or your radiator is blocked, or your coolant is too low.

Switch off if the engine overheats. End of story.

True, it depends on the situation. Why some cars don't have a gauge for water temp is stupid as you would be able to tell if it's getting worse or better by watching the gauge

as one motoring publication said; fashion engineering housewives; get intimidated by gauges so lets just put a light on it;

when the light comes on say your prayers:D

Ja. if I had a car like that I'd definitely set up something with elm-obd and a tablet/phone + torque. Madness.

Question is what to set the alarm to?

Its got a setting to allow alarms, but not entirely sure what it must be set to.

Some say 120 some say 110 others say 108.......

I good indicator of engine heat is how often your fan comes on. Some fans also spin harder in relation to the increasing heat.

Remember when my Ford overheated the fan sounded like a industrial vacuum cleaner.

Dont fans spin at the same speed usually?

Unless I'm mistaken that's what i always thought....

a radiator or a fan is not a specialized type of a device, a kia picanto and a i10 are almost equal in terms of engine size and if the fan and radiator are compatible then there is no reason to worry.if the fan comes on at the the its predetermined time then it is function correctly

You set it to nothing, you wait for the warning light to come on... Have you read your manual yet, if you really are dead set on this the temp will be in there. I found the manual for the UK version - the light comes on at 120±3°C. So like (almost) everyone has already said, 100°C is just fine

Depends if your vehicle has a variable clutch or not on the fan. I'd suspect on your car it will be either on of off since it's in a low price segment
