Comrades,

Really enjoying the 3g system, and have taken great delight in finally been able to give Telkom their walking papers this month, another victory for the working class, viva!

I need a bit of advice, I want to set up a similar 3g connection for my g/friend, who only requires about 150Meg per month usage.

From my enquiries I am told that the datacard required to connect is only supplied to the 500Meg contracts and above.

I see there are some really attractive blackberry packages on at the moment, with email following technology. Is it not possible to connect to the internet using a laptop computer via such a device that is 3g enabled? Does such a device exist?

If not, then is it not at all possible to get some sort of customised package for about 150Megs, that Vodacom will also supply the datacard as well for a slightly increased premium?

Dont want much, just access to good technology at a cheap price ;-)

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Peter.

... Telkom own a 50% stake in Vodacom ...

... and the working class would be hard pressed to afford R599 a month for 3G ...

Curses!!! My plans foiled again. Out damn Telkom, out, sell your shares so I can have nothing to do with you.

What worker cannot afford to spend R599 in this Proletariat paradise?

Surely you jest.

You rumbled my ruse good sir !

Why, just today I was accosted by a migrant worker outside these very offices where I sit now. He asked if I had anyone work, to which I replied "give us yer email address matey, if I find some work, I'll surely drop you a mail !"

Well, imagine my suprise when he hauled his Mobile out of his plastic shopping bag, asked for my email address and emailed me his business card right there on the spot using Vodacom 3G technology !

I tells ya, I was a fool before, but my eyes are now open !

The internet is indeed reaching the masses here - well done ANC and Telkom and Vodacom to boot ! - oh happy day !

You can get a free datacard with the 3G500 package. I think it's R 350,00 a month.

You can also just use a 3G phone as your internet connection, no problem there.

The Blackberry, however, is not a 3G device as far as I know.

Last time I heard the various "Data Bundles" offered were not available for data-card customers at this stage. (Has this changed ?)

That got me thinking - I was going to go data-card to home-office "server" machine ... and having to import a PCMCIA-to-PCI slotcard to do so.

It would appear that a "cheaper solution" would be to get hold of the (say Nokia 6680) and connected directly that way.
(Perhaps one of the kind in-the-know folk will post a link for instructions on how to setup said DUN connection using a cellphone ;-))

The 3G 150 package (R150 p/m gives 150 Mb bundle)
Should be sufficient for what was originally required.
