Hi,

we've heard that Telkom considers some technologies as "hogs".

Hence, they decided that South Africans are effectively not allowed to access such technologies by charging exorbitant fees.

Let's make a list of such technologies Telkom effectively blocks. Each and every one has an impact, if not economic, then freedom of speech.

The longer the list, the stronger the argument that Telkom is forcing South Africa down the digital cliff.

Internet Radio
Internet Video

P2P
International VPN
ip-tv
Automatic updates (some of them are realy big)
VideoOIP

In general anything to-do with downloading or streaming Video/ISOs/Audio, in short they blocking the Web's multimedia ability.

Home Security Streaming - i.e. Security Cam at home emails you and you get the streaming video of the possible intruder. Categories = STATIC IP (Home Hosting) + VIDEO STREAMING.

Care to share some details...was just asked about this today

I was merely pointing out that if you run an international VPN your bound to end up being capped/discontinuation of international bandwidth. As such it’s not really a ideal solution.

I guess it will still work if you not planning on sending/receiving more than 3 gigs of traffic from the network in a months time.

I'm new to the country and I am getting scared now .. yeah, the service packs and windows update files, linux distros, oh oh oh .. I was going to re-build my machine soon :/ There's always heaps of updates and new versions of applications that need to be downloaded.

Sending high resolution Photoshop / Illustrator or similar files to Printing company overseas or receiving them from other (outsourced) designers overseas, where one file can be as large as 300 - 500 MB if it's a high resolution file for Printing for example - this can really hinder business badly!

IDSL (DSL over ISDN). I don't even want to THINK (myself included) how many people had to either cancel their ISDN lines (or get a SECOND ANALOGUE LINE) for something that is not needed in the first place.

Allot of people actually use ISDN because it is two channels. Now, with Analogue DSL, they will either have 1 Channel, or 3 Channels - either of which is going to cost them more than what they paid for the original 2 Channels on ISDN.

Coincidance?? I think not.

Sending my photos/movies to my family overseas.
Watching my kids at home via my camserver.
Sending documents for print.

Downloading movies (Legit)
Purchasing SW online.
Effective online banking.
AND DO NOT FORGET - Serving my bathroom to the world with a webcam ;)

cyber7

Musica's online music store
Software ISO (Legit e.g. under MSDN Universal Subscribtion, and Open Source)
Remote Assistance/VNC
www.zombo.com
