No, there is nothing wrong with the title, it is referring to the "Dead and Dying" of "Technology" hence the possessive apostrophe.
Then if you were to say:
Technology's dying. vs. Technology's dying (gadgets).
How would one distinguish between the two? Is it all down to context?
This stuff is interesting. You could try use:
Technology's dying. vs. Dying technologies. However that results in the second statement still being ambiguous as it could also refer to Dying technologies pink...![]()
I read it as a contraction:
Technology is dead and dying.
That's why the headline is poor. It's unintentionally ambiguous.
But as Quinton pointed out that makes no sense. If technology is dead, then how can it still be dying?
So using deduction one can infer the correct meaning.
Anyway, thanks for the feedback everyone, we'll try to do better next time![]()

Technology, as a category, is a noun. The dead and dying technologies belong to that category - ie "Technology's dead and dying gadgets".
There's no object. 'ElecEng's dead or dying' means that you yourself are dead or dying, not something that belongs to you. It's a nuance of the apostrophe that it can be either a contraction or a possessive; and not specifying an object makes it a contraction. No, there is nothing wrong with the title, it is referring to the "Dead and Dying" of "Technology" hence the possessive apostrophe.

Never really thought about that before, I wonder what it would be replaced with?
In this case the possessive creates a logical, grammatically correct sentence, where the contraction does not. But, that said, there are many examples in English of sentences that can be taken more than one way and normally the context gives the intended meaning. Then how would you say Technology is dead and dying?
Surely it's the same way?
Ye.. pagers are probably the only thing that will live on that list.
Its still a good solution, even with cellphones.
In a hospital situation :
- It can be given to a person who is then responsible for any calls on that number.
- can be handed over easily to some one else
- not valuable like a cellphone so wont be stolen
- battery lasts longer.
I used to have a pager before it was common to have a cellphone. Was fun for a bit but sucked that I could not send messages back. If there was a two way pager system I would have stuck with it for longer.
+ Instant delivery of message, not like some SMS's that only comes through hours later if not the next day....
If ever an article headline needed some proofreading this is it.
Total facepalm.
Agreed... and it hasn't been corrected either.
It's been pointed out that it can be seen as grammatically correct.
Valerion's gadgets
Valerion's dead and dying gadgets
Valerion's dead and dying
Technology's dead and dying gadgets
Technology's dead and dying
It bloody well is not grammatically correct without a direct object predicate. It's been pointed out that it can be seen as grammatically correct.
