Certain situations have caught my attention recently into the way we perceive our varying relationships with others and how it is connected through the way we communicate especially today in this digital age.
I find myself using the likes of Facebook daily and probably more frequently than I should, then again what truly defines too frequent?
I have access to the internet almost 24/7. Unless I am out over the weekend, evenings or asleep which means I am online and contactable on Facebook Chat, Mxit, MSN, Google Talk and Skype literally 80% of the week.
Besides questioning the above.. lets ask a quick psychological question. You have identified someone you may be interested in more than friends. You have now added this girl on Facebook and Mxit... If she is on Google Talk, MSN you have done the same on those platforms as well. Chances are she will not be online the same frequency a person like myself may be online.. or anyone else that is very connected in the world, this means 99% of the time she logs onto Mxit etc myself (or the person) would be available to chat.
Now the observation I am questioning? Is it possible that a always available state would be counter productive to a closer bond being formed between people due to possible reasoning such as a feeling of security on their part. They feel this person is always available. No need to seize the moment while they are online or the next time they see them. He/She will always be there in 5 minutes, I just need to just log onto Mxit.
How does the always online state affect this? I clearly cant try fit all my thoughts on this subject into the post else you may be reading a small novel, but I think it is possble you take a lot of the initial intrigue away if you maintain a always contactable state through the likes of Facebook Chat and ohter instant messengers.
My statement with romantic relationships that are forming would be. Always availability through a cellphone is okay. Voice calls and maybe sms from time to time. Keyword there is sms you may take time to reply. Instant messengers can be counter productive on a psychological level if you are always contactable I think.
