Expert says we are on the brink of a nation-wide blackout [audio]

Energy expert Ted Blom spoke to Martin Bester on Jacaranda FM, and said that it’s a daily fight to keep the lights on, and that there’s a possibility for a total blackout in the near future.

Blom also answered questions from listeners. One caller wanted to know if it was true that Koeberg is running on all reactors due to maintenance not being carried out as required. Blom confirmed that it was indeed the case, and added:

“Koeberg is only on one reactor at the moment. It has two. The one that is out of service is […] being refuelled at the moment and will probably come online again within the next 30 days if nothing goes wrong.”

Going forward, Blom suggests that a forensic audit be done at Eskom to “highlight and quantify the extent of the corruption and mismanagement and poor governance at Eskom.”

The lights could go off permanently

Another user wanted to know if the power could go off completely and never come back again. Blom said it’s a possibility and explained that we are on the edge of that every day. If the power demand is exceeded even with 1 kilowatt, the entire grid could crash:

“That’s a daily fight. It’s done by Simmerpan Eskom control centre in Germiston. If they are asleep for one second of the day and the demand exceeds the supply, it will be like putting a spanner in your bicycle wheel. The whole system will just collapse.”

Luckily that process is automated, but still under human supervision
 
Mmmmm.....well I would not say permanently....but from what I understand and have read, it can take days to a month to get the grid powered up from a national blackout.
 
What BS... same old crap spewed in 2008, and in 2010, and in 2014.

The grid can collapse, but then you're looking at a week or more to get the power stations sychronized countrywide again- that's what takes time.

Difference is that there's never been this level of load shedding at this time.
So definitely more serious than previously.

I beg to differ... we've been hit worse. I used to live in JHB at the time. Loss of productivity and all that is still remembered, as are all the nights stuck in darkness.

30 November 2014 through December 2014. I actually lost my shyte so badly I bought a generator that month and I remember using over 150l of petrol to get through December. We were even loadshed on friggen Christmas day.

Then it suddenly went away in March 2015... after they got their ransom.

Thank you.. I was still using my iPad to lurk on this forum while I waited for the power to come back.
That power cut season wasn't very long lived IIRC. Because by March 2015 we weren't using the generator much.

I am not lapping it up, I am now beyond gatvol of their ****. Instead of moaning on forums and upsetting people I am busy with an inverter install. I am waiting for my 13th check to put down the cash for a system which in time, will see me have the ESKOM connection REMOVED PERMANENTLY from my property.

We know they are lying, we know they are fscking cnut pieces of shyte and all this is, is punishment of the populace to make us more amenable to a tarriff increase or tax increase. But there are choices... don't get mad, get even and fsck them at their own game
