Teeth Whitening

I got the regular non charcoal version
A lot of "whitening" toothpastes really just give your teeth a slight blueish tint because it creates the optical illusion of whiteness. Same principle behind adding blue dye to car paint to get a more vibrant white. Try the kits with the mouth guard and keep them in for the full 15 minutes at a time.

So I was a heavy coffee drinker as a result my teeth have gotten pretty stained over the years, during December I quit coffee and started using Colgate's Active white toothpaste as a result the non-coffee stained parts of my teeth are whiter than they have ever been but the rest of my teeth are I wouldn't say yellow but definitely not white. My local dentist charges around R2k for teeth whitening.

I want to know is there a cheaper option available that works?
In short : No

Dont waste your time with special toothbrushes or Verimark toothpaste.

1. Go to your dentist and have trays made for your mouth
2. Buy Opalescence syringes either from your dentist (can be very pricey) or import from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/OPALESCENCE-...=1&keywords=opalescence&qid=1611068278&sr=8-4 (I have done this on a few occasions over the years)

Pro Tip: get the strongest %, but always follow the instructions. Keeping it in longer is not better. Also, get sensidine as your teeth will be very sensitive after use.

If I recall correctly, I got a gel with carbamide peroxide (same active ingredient in Opalescence) off the shelf at clicks. It was R199 and came with moldable trays you put in hot water. Two years ago?

Yes, it does work - I only became curious about it because my friends all of a sudden had dazzlingly white smiles and I knew it couldn't be natural.

@Polymathic : Please tell me about your experience quitting coffee! Addict here.

Do these products not affect the sensitivity of your teeth?

About the sensitivity - yes, after about a week my teeth were quite sensitive but along the gumline, so I wasn't sure if it was my gums or teeth reacting to the gel.

Just posted about that. Yes. It went away quickly. Not sure what this stuff does to your enamel though, package insert says it's safe but who knows.

I had mine done at the dentist for R2500 a few months ago. Definitely a bit whiter, but don't expect miracles. She also said that whitening toothpaste is just about useless on stains. It's just too mild.

By the middle of my final (2nd) application, my teeth were getting quite sensitive, especially when I was breathing through my mouth. Nose breathing during the procedure helped I think. Sensitivity was gone after 2 days, and was very mild.

She also told me to come back after a few days to do an extra application as there was still some gel left in the tube. It goes to waste otherwise. That was nice.

I'm afraid I can't help you, I'm a mutant who doesn't develop a chemical dependency on caffeine. I can stop anytime I want without developing any withdrawal symptoms.

@EMAM also uses a manmade teeth-whitener of some sorts. I'm gagging to know what it is and have ask many times, but she just won't spit it out and let me know :(

My dentist, who is generally reasonably priced, charges R3000 per arch for whitening. If you say R2000 or R2500 is that for both arches ?

Mine was R2500 for 3 applications on top and 2 on bottom. Cash only though and I think it was on special at that price. Cape Town.

pay 2k to a pro and get 2k of results or pay R50 for a tube of DIY hopeful miracles hmmm

The enamel is damaged temporarily even by pro and during this time anything "stainy" should be avoided. literally just bleached the **** out of your teeth

It’s more like, pay R2k to another human being preying on your gullibility to apply the R50 tube of gel vs. apply same tube yourself. Almost. It’s a weaker concentration (because we need to protect dummies from themselves) but it’s essentially the same thing with the same result, just takes longer.

Seriously, learn to do things for yourself.
