Telecommunication targets by DoC not substantive

It really doesnt seem like these people are that intersted in competing! 2010 and 5% my @$$

A high profile talk shop that has rendered nothing more than 'ambiguous targets'. I can predict the excuses already, the joy :(
Mike Lowry has the right idea when it comes to measuring progress.
A more appropriate way of measuring progress would be to set South Africa the target of falling within the top 25% of all countries regarding Internet access stated Lowry.
It doesnt have to be within the top 25%, but its a much more tangible and effective way of measuring ones progress than what they have proposed, surely, cant they see this? It is also less open to individual interpretation.
This is considering the fact that we were 1st in Africa where countries like Tunisia and Botswana now outshine us and that prior to 1993 we were ranked 15th in the world, now we dont even fit in the top 50 countries when it comes to internet penetration.
Sies

The trick is well known . You set up a " stategic" target for 3-10 years then who knows what is going to happened in 3 years so you can rest 3 years and take it from there.
This is the ABC which is being taught in all management schools.

Why don't they make LLU and access to undersea cables at wholesale prices targets. I guess then it would be obvious to everyone when they fail to get off their asses and do something, rather than just talk.

Meh...

don't we even have 5% already ? i mean seems awefully low. makes you wonder what happen in the last 10yrs of re-developemnt... nothin ?

I think they're getting 5% based on current PC access levels in SA (I seem to remember someone saying SA's was 10% atm). In the rest of the world, broadband penetration seems to be at about 50% of PC users.

Therefore: 50% of 10% = 5%

Currently we're at 0.1%

So 5 years to (sort of) get where everyone else is right now, with the current pc levels? Even if we achieve it, we'll still look stupid because by that point, we'll still have 10% pc penetration while the rest of the worl will be at 80% with 99% on broadband.

Plus they've made no definition of what "broadband" really is. Telkom could launch 56k adsl at dial up rates (say R350pm), get half the dial up users to switch and then turn around and say that they've achieved a huge jump in broadband usage.

Someone at the colloquium should point this bull$hit out.

Talk talk talk, I've been waiting 10 years...keep talking DoC you'll be assured of a nice new merc and a set of golf clubs if you do..

I agree with donaldza. All this talk is just that... talk.

What we need is deadlines, and asses on the line.

yup, i think mbeki should have said something like he wanted telecoms priceses sort by XX/XX/2005 or someones gonna be fired. The eay it is now it seems they are happy to delay and call a talk evey now and then to appease the masses and claim they are doing something.
