Telecoms competition hotting up

So whose going to be the first to admit to having a Neotel telephone number? :D

And now that I'm wondering... do Neotel themselves have a Neotel number... or are they still using Telkom as their Service Provider

By banding together and offering ridiculously low interconnect fees amongst themselves they'll be able to make quick inroads into the market - question is will they try to tackle the beast en masse?

Friend working for telkom says he had to remove telkom equipment from 5 different FNB ATMs yesterday. Apparently they're switching over to MTN/3G.

Another nail in telkom's coffin...

One of the gripes from VANS like Vox Telecom and Internet Solutions is the high rates Telkom charges their customers to call other networks – a direct result of Telkom’s high voice termination rates.

This doesn't make sense. Termination rates apply to incoming calls not outgoing calls. Telkom's high termination rates mean that it expensive for other operators to call them. The only reason for Telkom to charge their customers more is (a) Greed (b) Because they can (c) High interconnection fees being charged by the other companies.

Basic rules of interconnection mean that the smaller operators should have higher termination rates because the bigger operators can take advantage of their economies of scale and thus have a lower cost per call.

Another friend of mine from a large corporate says that they're trailing diginet lines from Neotel. Didnt give prices but says for the price of a 256k line they can now get a 2M line! Sounds promising!

They have Neotel numbers...I asked them :D
What does Telkodemonopolies charge to call a NeeTel number?

Don't know what you meant there.

If I make a call from my Telkodemonopolies landline, to another Telkodemonopolies landline - let say local on the same exchange, the call terminates at that exchange, and I get charged a local call termination fee by Telkodemonopolies - this should be free BTW.

If I make a call from my Telkodemonopolies landline, to a SA cell number, the call terminates at the cell network I'm calling into, and I get charged exorbitantly by Telkodemonopolies.

If I receive a call whilst in SA, I don't get charged for the incoming call on my landline or my cell.

if neotel's price and service is better than telkom, no guessing whats going to happen

Yea. I looked at the brochure, and they were talkin about business etc.. Where is the one for my house?

You mean your Mom's house?

Things are certainly starting to look promising. Neotel still needs to make a serious move in the broadband arena though.

Agreed. I'm hoping that will happen when they land Seacom. Then they will really be in a position to make a dent, and hopefully lose the lousy 3Gig cap.
