Telecoms competition

And here I thought we get the chance to win more freebies :o :D:D:D

Kudos to Altech for having the balls to go to court... I really do hope the court finds Altech's case favourable - this will be a major slap in the face of the Minister.

icasa and old fat arsed ivy are becoming a useless

But the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) and the minister of communications, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, opposed the application, arguing in court that allowing the more than 600 Vans licensees to “self-provide” would lead to extensive disruption of roads and other infrastructure.

Typical short sighted and lazy approach Gov has to solving problems. I fail to see how it would lead to extensive disruptions. This is a lame excuse in trying to protect Telkom's failing monopoly and the protection of their shares. Surely the local municipalities take charge of who has permission to dig up the roads. I doubt seriously that the license holders can just start ripping up the roads without the consent of the loacal authorities. So very easy to keep control of the situation, grant permission on a first come first serve basis, and allocate a limited time slot in which they must finish, failing which they have to re-apply and stand in the back of the que.

Aargh but why bother with something like that if it could benefit the country by helping to empower, educate and provide a eassy means to doing business. Keep the masses in the dark and they will never know the truth, therefore we won't loose their votes. Bloody typical...

If they had any sense they would require those digging up roads to repave to a higher standard than before . . . killing two infrastructure birds with one stone.

Houston, we have a problem... we got competition!!! <Oh no!!!>

to compliment Mr The_Librarian, more popcorn for all... :D

One requires a way-leave (permission document) to dig up public or private roads (gated type communities etc).

Further to that, as everyone, except ICASA and the stupid minister, realise it costs a fortune to lay fibre, not all 600 can afford it. It's been explained so many times, there's really no reason for her not to have gotten it by now.

You are spot on! How I wish we South Africans could realize that we are being treated with utter contempt by these politicians, irrespective of race. It is quite clear that the government does not want any free flow of information. That is why they have targeted the telecommunication sector this way. Well-to-do people can afford the internet and discuss issues, but for the needed change to occur, ideas need to be sold to more people. Unfortunately, it is a fact that government propaganda dominate the tv and radio landscape. With that being the only avenue to most people in the country, it ends up being the government propaganda that is sold to the masses out there. With PROPER BROADBAND, services could be made to simulate TV and radio. That way people would get to hear more than just propaganda, but unfortunately the government has decided to shut this up with legislated monopolies- leading to ridiculously high prices. At the end of the day, all non-government communication is bound to exclude a huge majority of people. Unfortunately democracy is a numbers game, therefore the powers-that-be win: Whether the country gets screwed in the process, they don't care. Sigh!

Consider this: Purportedly, in the interests of competition, there is this new technology called WIMAX. An adsl replacement, we are told. Who gets the license? Believe it or not this is the list:-
1. Telkom - the very monopoly who is supposed to be given some competition
2. Sentech - a proven failed enterprise. A new definition of 'useless'
3. Neotel - I won't say much, lest I derail the topic.

ARE WE FOOLS?

Makes me wonder: 'When is that Seacom cable landing! By the way, they tried to block it and failed!. Good news after all!'
