Telecoms spending yields big rewards

South Africa's small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are reaping big rewards from the billions of rands invested by telecoms groups in laying new networks and upgrading existing infrastructure.

So far, as a SME myself I have not seen any benefit. I am still paying obscene amounts for basic internet connectivity and at this stage I am considering cancelling my service and doing business in a more traditional format.

The only SMEs that currently seem to be benefitting from this are ones that are supplying trenching, fibre, network equipment (contracts already awarded) and maintenance on those fibre lines.

IMHO, within the space of a few years, this benefit will be passed on to other businesses that will be able to use the infrastructure currently being provisioned.
