Telecos pay for govt function

no wonder there's no progress, whether it's fixed-line or mobile telecomms. she has them all by their short and curlies, even paying for a party on her behalf. so every time she gives a speech, whether she's right or wrong, these telecomms companies will celebrate all the bullsh1t she feeds parliament by throwing her a party? hmmm, makes you think  competition my ass, what's the point when the only licensed companies and the telecommunications minister are sleeping with each other

Shocking but not entirely unheard of in any industry. It can be construed as bribery but they will find another word for it. I must say that the more I look at the situation in SA's telecoms industry the more I am convinced something at top level is not quite as it should be. Note that I am saying this in a soft tone...

:)

ermm sorry for the foul language there antowan :D but when you read of things like this it really makes one lose all hope of any positive change. whats worse is this is basically bribery, but its perfectly legal

It's similar to prison inmates throwing a huge bash for their parole officers.

Who is in who's pocket one has to ask.

Well, this story pretty much explains the rationale behind some (if not ALL) of Poison Ivy's insane decisions so far.

Antowan, at the ADSL hearing at ICASA I spoke to two of the top telecomm regulatory people and they confirmed your suspicion. The problem is what to do about it ? We are stuck with a few very greedy fat cats in industry who are feeding a few power hungry politicians who manipulate a few puppet bureaucrats who make a few regulations and we all pay the price.

I wonder what would happen to the company who declined the "invitation" to act as sponser?

Oh, silly me.

Its not out of the ordinary at all for this sort of thing to happen, not in the least. All industries do it. What got me was it was a bit extravagant. None the less Bekdik, you have asked the right question.
But I mean government and these telecom companies are one and the same thing are they not, if you look at who owns them (sharewise). Privatised my arse! All one big happy, wealthy, getting richer, screw the public, family.

Hi Sneeky

Relevant question indeed! I have seen it so many times: when someone sponsors an event, business, website, forum etc. they are somehow protected from criticism or whatever else. This is only normal and exactly what one should expect from the event organizers of organization/company in question. Why byte the hand that feeds you? (BTW: We certainly do not have this ‘protection’ policy on MyADSL :D). When government is involved, however, questions must be asked regarding their objectivity regarding rulings, regulations and so forth.

Regards,

RPM
