..which is why a duopoly doesn't necessarily result in free market conditions and pricing: two crooks (sorry, did I say that out loud? ..I meant (antagonistically) "competitive businesses") can collude to the detriment of the ready-to-be-fleeced (sorry, I meant "buying public", or *snort* "freemarket consumer"), while it's somewhat more difficult to pull off with 3 and definitely more so with 4 suppliers.

As a possible case in point, I have a dim, dark, distant memory of MTN and Vodacom being busted sometime back for collusion on price fixing and such, something called the "London documents" ..or something like that, am I on the right track or is the bell in my head (more) cracked (than usual)?

The problem as welll is the SNO is a very weak competitor. The don't have a huge war chest to compete with telkom. Their strategy seems to be very conservative. The only way to decrease prices is to open up the sector to entrepeneurs ie. xyc telecoms decide to provide broadband to sandton using wimax xxx telecoms decide they can do it cheaper by installing fibre and they go for it. It is much easier to compete with telkom on a localised level and with certain services than to compete with telkom on national level and delivering all service including pots.

Marais said that it is Telkom’s aim to attain a full ICT capable NGN network by 2010. The incumbent has also previously indicated that they are aiming for 1 million broadband customers by this date making 2010 a big target for South Africans to watch out for.

Telkom has however vowed to remedy this situation with a target of 1 million Telkom broadband users by 2008.

The reality is (measured at current service levels) that they might have 15% ADSL penetration, but unless they jack up their service, 90% of these lines will be out-of-order waiting for a technician to attend.

If they can't repair the current faults in 2 weeks, how long is it going to take before they will be able to send a techie if they have 5 times more ADSL lines running?

Is it just me or does it seem that everything is happening in 3 or 4 years time? i mean sod this I dont want to wait until 2010 and i dont think i should have to.

sod 2010. fix the existing stuff first then do the 2010 stuff. old ivy made a comment the other day about showing off our technological gems in 2010. yeah the whole world is gonna see exactly how to turn a diamond into a lump of coal.

Yes... measures like ramping up the price, slowing ADSL speeds down and such underhanded tactics to make the problem go away for a while... But, quess what? It won't help, but will exacerbate the problem...

Thanks.. Please tell Papi that 2008 is around 950 days away. This equates to roughly 678 business days, or roughly 5400 hours in which to make the connections. Perhaps I could send him a Hellkom calendar and a stopwatch?

ADSL penetration

There is penetration all right. But its not the kind that the consumer likes.

If they cannot even do ADSL right, what difference will this WiMax etc make? Wake up and smell the coffee, Papi. We just want something faster than dialup, is up 24/7 at an affordable rate. You can keep your 1Gbit con, just make 192k affordable.
