I bring good news to Durbanites that Telkom 3G has gone Live on a few sites in the Durban area. I will confirm the exact areas by the end of the month.
Those people living in the Overport area you should pick up the SA 02 Operator on your 3G phone if you do a network search.

Could all Durbanites please do a network search on their 3G phones and post replies with areas that you are picking up the signal.

Telkom Direct Shops do have sim cards in stock. If you got Coverage, Please go get a sim card now.

Havn't TesTED the Service Yet !

Howzit , Superman

i havn't tested the service yet but my informer at Telkom has confirmed that Overport has gone live. Approximately 30-40 sites are being worked on currently in the Durban area. TELKOM will erect about 5 new masts of their own. They are sharing tower space with VodaCOM.
The towers are going live as they are completed. The Durban switch is working and can connect and route Voice calls. All towers have to be ready by end of feb 2009. The official launch is the last week of march 2009. Will keep u updated when i know more.

@DXL: Do you have any further information regarding Telkom HSDPA speed upgrades to 14.4Mbps etc? With no 14.4Mbps devices currently available it would have been a good marketing stunt to launch with a 14.4Mbps ready network and then claim to have a technically superior network with the fastest, most cost-effective technology to attract customers.

That would be awesome but technically they are ahead with full 7.2 coverage. I read news from the other hspa providers saying they were 'upgrading' to hspa, with no real detail yet. Also, I still see many 3.6 devices being sold - haven't seen a 14.4 device yet but a good news reporter will happily climb in if an operator claims a fast network but hasn't done their homework with stock of devices.

The network is fairly un-busy so it's probably a good time to try. I haven't tried it yet but I have tried both the other's and I rejoice when I even get a short burst of 1.4 mbps, let alone 3.6 or 7.2!

Thanks 4 the infor, thou one question remains: how far does a tower cover?
UMTS 2100 seems to cover just the area around it....Kinda bad move if i would want to get calls on my phone with the telkom sim (data only for now)

Thou from what iv found Sea Cow lake has great coverage from the residential areas / the N2 right up to the kwa-mashu off ramp.(THATS HUGE!)

Came to Mt Edgecombe and the coverage seems to just end 1 km from the Vodacom Whitehouse tower (if im right about the tower)

2100 = 5 km max Coverage

2100mhz Umts under ideal conditions without obstacles can give u up to 5km radius max. However the Umts @ 900mhz or 850mhz u can get up to 15km max. But here in SA we get between 2-3 km Coverage on Average in the 3G 2100mhz. VOICE is definitely going to be problem for now with Telkom.
But more competition means better Lower Tariffs 4 all.

Yeah true 850 could have saved them some time with coverage,I only hope that telkom doesnt make their 3G service like their WiMAX ..."there but just there to say we got it"...

There are alot of people out there looking for INTERNET access without the paper work,if Telkom plays their cards right they can give a much needed change in the 3G market.

Only hope
