I am trying to decide on which one of the two to go for.I have had some experience with Mweb and i know that their service is top notch.I have also read some comments in the telkom feedback section that suggests that telkom ADSL is surprisingly good.

I am looking for the best between the two when it comes to daytime download speeds and Night time download speeds. There are some other ISPs which i have tried out in the past and i got burnt :wtf: so Mweb and telkom are the only options i have left.I need some honest input from Telkom 4MB do uncapped users and Mweb 4 meg uncapped users to help me decide which option i should go for. Thanks in advance. :)

Well, Telkom certainly throttle the other speeds, so why not this one? During the day our 1mb at the shop runs about 450 kbps. Telkom say it is the lines/distance from exchange/dodgy router/computer/viruses/other people using it(?). You get the excuse of the day

Mine is not throttled.

Nor's mine.

I suspect that if you experience problems with TI uncapped you'll have the same problems with other ISPs uncapped offerings.

BTW it's important not to confuse Telkom problems (ADSL related) with TI (Telkom Internet), the ISP. They're actually different entities.

The main difference between MWeb and Telkom is that MWeb shape/prioritize their offering to give the average user the best experience whereas Telkom (currently) give you the raw bandwidth and leave it up to the user to control their experience.

Both approaches have their advantages but I prefer Telkom. YMMV

Well I moved my Mweb R539 account to their new 4 meg "uncapped" R359 product.
When you hit 45GB - they throttle you to 1kb/s down to no connection at all!!!
This is effectively a capped product.

I am now going to Telkom and hope to find an ISP that know the meaning of fair use.

...unfortunately, I had a bad experience with mweb's 4mb uncapped...On day 21...with a total of downloading of only 68Gb....i was THROTTLED to 0.25mb/s. What i like about Telkom (although i am not there), I saw their info regarding the 4mb uncapped account...they only do "shaping"....and hardly any "throttling" (which in my eyes seems quite ok). WHAT they shape....i really don't know...but I'm heading over to Afrihost's CAPPED 100Gb @ 10mbps @R699( including my 10 meg line)

Telkom does not throttle unless you have high usage, about 120GB on a 1Mb/s line. The fact that you say this happens during the day makes me suspect the dslam you are on suffers from backhaul congestion. PM TelkomZA with the phone number the service is on and a explanation of the issue.

Speed Restrictions

6am - 6pm: up to 650 Kbps
6pm - 10pm: up to 1 Mbps
10pm - 6am: up to 4 Mbps
No restrictions on local data

This looks copied and pasted. Not sure where you got that info from. I have never been throttled to a 1mb speed on Telkom...in fact, I can't say that I have ever seen any signs of throttling from my side. people confuse dslam congestion with throttling, I think.

In his defence it is from the Telkom AUP. It's only applied if their under-utilised network becomes congested....

Someone rehashed a year old thread....

How is it going with you now some 10 months later?
