A mate of mine has just gone to apply for ADSL - he made his application at the N1 City Telkom Office (Cape Town). He was told by one of the consultants there that from the 1st of August, there will no longer be a 384 service and the entry level service will be a 512 offering. I have asked at other Telkom branches and nobody seems to know anything about it. Can anybody confirm this? Has anybody else heard anything about this? It is apparently at no extra charge to existing 384Kbps clients and they will be upgrading everybody across the country. :D Wouldn't that be GREAT? Please let me know if anyone else out there knows anything about it.

there was a forum posting going around a while ago about prices maybe being reduced , increased speeds and bigger caps.

i showed this to a good *source* within the beast.... their (senior level) reaction - not a chance.

lets hope for something good?

yeah, poor sods on the 4MB lines... ha, they will get bumped up to 6 or 8! just to eat their caps faster. LOSE!

oh wait, thats me :(

Wont be suprised, theyd do it to justify no drop in charges

I for one will be going to a 1Meg line then.
I'm currently on a 4Meg but can only sync at 2 so screw that.

Just waiting for 512 to get bumped up to 1Meg.

I think you asked your contact "in the beast" a bit too much. I said nothing about bigger caps or reduced prices - only that the 384 Kbps are being bumped up to 512 Kbps and this will become the Telkom entry level service as of 01/08/08. This is what my mate was told when he applied for ADSL the other day. I am trying to see if there can be any confirmation of this?

This would be very interesting if they do do this.
It will be one of the most decent things they have ever done.
I hope that this is not just a rumour.

I know lower-echelon Telkom staff are woefully misinformed as a rule, but here's hoping.

If they bump us to 512kbps minimum, I might upgrade to 1mbps (or more) if it costs what 512kbps currently does.

Quiet a few people has 384, there was a poll on a "news" site a few or two back. I doubt they will be pushing it up. :(

Well they did it with 192k bumped to 384k a while back so it has precedent.

Not really.. If i remember correctly at that time ICASA was reviewing what it interprets as broadband. They announced the upgrade and pushed to have 256kbps minimum as the definition, which 192k would have lost out
