Telkom 8 Mbps ADSL plans

Anything that helps me patch faster is great.

But affordable (R30) caps need to be a a minimum of 5GB to make it even remotely feasible .

I still cry when I think back a year or so when I downloaded 5.5 gig on my unshaped account. Lived from bread and water the next month!
 
I really don't understand why people start complaining about bigger CAPS when you we're talking about line speeds. Please stick to the topic and be happy with the thought that international latencies may decrease dramatically, actually making South Africa a viable broadband competitor. If you feel the "need" to download more then get a bigger CAP, CAP-size is YOUR problem. This is about line speed, not how much porn you want to download.
 
My line is so unstable at 4Mb that I asked them to drop it to 2Mb. 8Mb (on this exchange) is useless to me...

Exactly! This isn't about how much porn you want to download. It is about how quickly you want to download it!
 
Line speed inadvertedly affects cap size since you go through a lot more bandwidth, often without even realising it. When I got ADSL and I didn't have enough money to get more than my 1 gig per month, I was always going "HTF did I go through that much in 1 day!"

And as much as I would like faster download speeds, I would prefer higher caps and lower international latencies.

As far as I understand latency is affected by the available bandwidth. So more bandwidth will benefit ADSL latencies at the end of the day. Though we will never see local latencies to international countries.

Why would international latencies come down with the jump to 8mbps? International latencies should almost be the same on a stable 384 and stable 8192 line. Traffic, line quality (not quantity), medium, distance an complexity affect latencies. We complain about cap sizes when it comes to line speed since caps limit what you can do with that pipe. It's like having a storm water drain pipe for a glass of water. It's nice to have, but it might just be a waste if you don't have enough traffic for it. The problem is, traffic volume is expensive.
 
i was almost sacrificed when I raised the 8m thing, now here it is, back again, when will it die once and for all, I think the day i see a telkom 8m line, I will eat my own stool

I live 5km from Cape town city bowl.
2 months ago i upgraded my line from 384 to 4meg.
Since then ive been having an intermitted connection issue.
Telkom's response to this is to lower my bandwith every time i complain by a gig. They say that they provide 1 - 4 meg, 1 meg guarenteed, thus are not obligated to deliver the full 4meg..
Their argument is since im too far from an exchange the high bandwidth over the line may lose connection.
Im at 2meg now still paying for 4, yet im still having the &^#%# issue...

Moral of the story:
In a main city 5km from the business hub they cant even deliver 4meg..
Eight eight 8? what 8!! meg???!
sorry, I dont see them being able to support that on their current network they took over from Noah after he exited the ark..

Yea, I'm on "2Mb" as well since Telkom is such a useless bunch of w@nkers that they know they can't actually deliver, so they don't guarantee 4Mb, otherwise they'd actually have to do something with their network and fix it.
8Mb is useless until they guarantee it!

Exactly what I'm talking about.
I'm physically only about 3.5km from the exchange, however, the copper doesn't run directly to my house, and the route it takes, means that according to Telkom, I'm greater than 5km from the exchange and have to live with the sucky 2Mb speed.

I have a stable 4mbps line. I will only accept an upgrade if there are NO extra costs involved, ISP or otherwise.
 
I will take an 8meg line thanks.

I can just buy more cap or just watch what I download and limit my cap to what I now use

Cant even cope with 4meg what about 8

My 4meg was cruising fine until telkom droped my speed to 2meg, i1st thought it was a line fault until i saw thins happening to my other sites in other towns aswell, and everytime i report it to telkom their answer is you're only paying for a 1meg line so if you reach 4meg it good but they only have to gaurentee 1meg so as long as its above 1meg, its not their problem. So If they cant even supply a 4meg line what is the chances that they will be able to supply me with a 8meg line. What we then noticed is that noboddy in town was able to get adsl that still hasnt got it because there isnt enough slots at the exchange, now suddenly they can provide everyone with dsl again, I wonder why, cutting into my speed and bandwidth are you. :mad:
 
Marius Mostert, Telkom SA’s Managing Executive for Network Infrastructure Provisioning, merely said that Telkom is currently investigating improvements to its ADSL speeds which includes the possibility of upgrading the 4 Mbps offering to an 8 Mbps service.

September added that the upgrade is more than just a ‘speed issue’, and that Telkom is looking at increasing the overall value proposition with this upgrade.

I would like Telkodemonopolies to consider shoving the value of the following proposition from whence the monopolistic beast thinks the sun shines: all ADSL hostages should leave instructions with the future executor of their estate to cancel ADSL before the ink dries on their death certificate, or just cancel ADSL now bcos there is no way that Telkodemonopolies is ever going to provide a decent ADSL service in this country - for that to happen, several competing ADSL network operators are required, and there are none for the foreseeable future, not to mention the fact that Telkodemonopolies should be talking about xDSL and not boring old slow ADSL.
 
I was at UCT today, had a 500 meg quota i thought i would rape. Since its pretty much holidays no one was there, so downloaded my 500 megs of data at 2megabytes/s. 300 meg file in 2 min... Sigh.
 
what do you guys think of a service where you can have 4x 4mb lines (16mb dl/2mb upl)or Telkoms 4x 8mb line (32mbdl/4mb upl), combined into one big download pipe.

You'll be intrested in such service for home, SME and corporate use?
 
I'd prefer them to make sure that everyone is capable of receiving 4 mbps and then doubling the speed. I mean its no use of increasing line speed of the hotel/house/institution that the 2010 tourists will be staying in, if the line can only support 2 mbps.

Yes I am sure some folks would be interested as Vox Fishbone & Technology Concepts are marketing their own
channel bonding solutions connection back to their own bandwidth, ideally if the DSLAM MLPPP was enabled that will be great
thats refer to other methods of bonding

Are you on the Constantia Park exchange, or the Constantia Park IMAX? The IMAX is a remote outdoor unit mounted in a street cabinet connected either by fibre or by PCM over copper to the exchange. The subscriber connection to the IMAX is the "last mile" (or less) via copper.

The Constantia Park exchange is that whacking great building near the corner of Hans Strijdom Drive - the one with the cellphone mast and tower next to it.

There may in fact be several IMAXes connected to the exchange, concentrating subscribers relatively far from the exchange onto higher capacity transmission systems. The effect of this is to shorten the distance between the subscriber and the ADSL equipment (DSLAM) in the IMAX.
