Hello my fellow interwebbers.

I stay in Roodepoort, Wilgeheuwel. Since the new year, the line speed in this area has been absolutely crap. And by crap I mean, inconsistently useless. From 4mbs full speed blazing, to 5 minutes later speed tests giving me a 0.01mbs downstream. Is there anyone else in this area having the same experience? I'm trying to eliminate the possibilities between, ISP (Telkom), the line provider (Telkom) or whether it might be the exchange.

To openweb/afrihost forum moderators. Could either of you kindly provide me with a trial period account so I can eliminate the isp one. Also, would you be able to hook me up with a trial period bundle account?

Many thanks.

H

Please excuse my ignorance, but how do you run two accounts? Must you change the router setting when switching?
That's one option, you can also put your modem in bridged mode and use pppoe dialup - google for more info.

AFAIK - you need to change the router settings. At least - that's what I need to do, although I wouldn't be surprised if I'm missing some really basic feature in my Router Settings that allows me to store 2 separate Account Details, and allows for a simple switch... [mental note to self - have a look!].

I signed up for the Afrihost 1GB account towards the middle of last year, when TI was giving problems. At the time, I couldn't quite understand how AfriH make their money on them, essentially giving away 1GB of data every month... But I'm closer to understanding now... :)

I hardly ever actually use that 1GB, due to the schlepp of having to enter the settings, and reboot the router - and couldn't care for having to monitor the usage, so as not to go over the cap. But increasingly, I've been throwing money their way, with top-ups - since it being a Capped account, it absolutely flies compared to TI at the moment... So when I want to stream a movie and don't want stutter/buffering/SD instead of HD - I fire up Afrihost, load data - and use it. When all is done, I go back to TI for the upgrades etc. that usually don't need to happen immediately, but use up plenty of GB's...

I'm in to minds about switching to AH. But if I were to move away from TI, it will be to them, since everything appears to work so seamlessly. I'm quite aware of the fact that Capped will obviously work better than Uncapped, with shaping etc... so in no hurry just yet... And by the looks of things - people are cancelling with TI in their droves at the moment... which might just be a good thing, for those who stick it out... :p

Yea that's how i do it just make sure PPPOE relay is enabled on the router.

My routers and friends ones have all been setup to use pppoe with factory defaults so he may not even need to do it.

On my netgear modem I just have Telkom Internet on WAN1 and use WAN2 to store Afrihost settings and yes you have to use PPPOE relay. Easy just then to save settings afterwards and everytime you need to switch just logon to the router and choose between WAN1 or WAN2. ;)

I had NO internet this weekend...from free upgrades to no internet...when will this be sorted out. Yes Telkom 10 points for the upgrade, 0 points for the services...So how are we suppose to see this act of "kindness": wow, free upgrade and that cancels out the poor service and no reception. Yeah, that sums it up. FFS.

So go and rant in the TelkomZA or TI Uncapped threads, the OP is trying to establish which ISP is responsible for the ADSL side of their new voice line (which seems to have been carried over from the previous subscriber).

 Jammer, many apologies, wrong thread. I was following MyBB on two systems and got confused.

:)Good morning to you. I'm asking a big favour from you. I am >3 score years +17 and battle with my router settings. Will you please PM a "monkey see, monkey do" description to do these setting. I'm currently with TI (horrors) was previously with Mweb and want to trial Afrihost free 1GB offer. If it is easier to email then please do so.

:)Please ignore this request, I have found the relevant section in the manual and will try there.

Will do so, but just one correction on my previous post is that you don't need to switch between WAN1 and WAN2 after enabling PPPoE Relay, but rather setup a PPPoE connection from Windows 7 by entering the settings for the other ISP that you want to use. Here's a link how to do this: http://www.vianet.com.np/pppoe-connection-in-windows-7/

In the end you should have a connection like this: (Hope you get sorted. Please let us know by posting back on the forum)
PPPoE Relay Usage-Netgear DGN2200Mv2.jpg

Afterwards please verify your connection to Afrihost by logging into their clientzone website at http://clientzone.afrihost.com/ and checking your usage. The speedtest on MyBB is also good at displaying which ISP you are using on the results page.:)
