Telkom Ads Opening in New Tab Without User Action

Hi Guys

Recently I have been having an issue visiting webpages displaying ads from Telkom in particular. I could be reading an article on MyBB with a Telkom ad on the sides and all of a sudden, without touching the mouse or keyboard, the Telkom's website opens up in a new active tab.

This has happened on my PC with Firefox and my laptop with Chrome. The link URL that opens is https://secure.telkom.co.za/today/s...lusive_20mbps_fibre_promo&utm_content=300x250

Is anyone else having this issue?

Scan PC with Malware Bytes, then download and install Adware Blocker.

Malwarebytes found nothing. I have also had Avast on my PCs since forever (yes I know they have spying on me and selling my data - I just haven't gotten around to changing) and it hasn't reported anything.
 
As @ponder said, ublock origin should sort it.

Personality I use Malwarebytes Browser Guard. Which is similar to ublock.

It might still be.
Your Chrome might have hijacked extensions. My suggestion would be to backup/sync your data to Google (through your Google account). Then reset Chrome and make sure your history/cache etc is cleared. I can't recall right now if the reset also removes cache and history

Once reset you log back into Chrome with your user account from Google. Your settings, bookmarks and extensions will be re-applied, might take a few seconds to complete.

Also check that under site settings and notifications that nothing from Telkom is enabled there.

It might be a simple thing like previously allowing push notifications from them.

I have firefox on my PC, which is where I first noticed the issue. Then I found the same issue on Chrome on my laptop. They don't even have the same extensions installed. I have never allowed push notifications on either.

I've seen many sites online where pop ups appear simply by scrolling a page. Same for clicking anywhere.

Whether Telkom implements this I'm not sure of. If it's only on mybb. Then maybe rpm can sort it.
 
Pretty sure it's Telkom.

I've been to sites that have ads the pop up from scrolling or just loading the page. TPB and other torrents sites are notorious for overlaying "invisible links" to ads that you have to click on before the you can interact with the webpage.

This is different, because it's reputable sites (not just myBB) that I frequent, that did not display this behaviour previously and only does so with Telkom ads.

I just wanted to know if others are experiencing it. So if you happen to get a Telkom ad on site and it does so, then maybe we can all lash out Telkom, instead of feeling like it's an isolated anomaly.

I don't have this problem, so troubleshooting makes it more difficult, especially with so many variables to take in account.

If all else fails and you are gatvol then a good format and reload might give the required relief.

Just to kill the itch and see if it works :)

My PC did it twice yesterday.

Also opens up Telkom pages without me clicking anywhere.

Very intriguing.
 
It's called Push Notifications or in Opera Site Notifications. Some websites push ads like that. You need to look in your browser Privacy and Security settings for Notifications and see which sites are allowed.

I mentioned it on post 10. He replied in 11 to say he hasn't allowed any.
Double checking won't hurt.
