Hi

Today I ordered Telkom 1GB ADSL package for my home.
I chose the 384Kbps option.

Are there any drawbacks to this option I chose?
I decided to test waters first before opting for something faster.

Regards
L

Only drawback will be, on day 2 you will have to get some more bandwidth. That first gig flies past like a jet airplane.

if all you're gonna use is 1gig then anything faster than 384 is just silly.

yeah, adsl is the way to go, and yes that 1st gig will go very quickly, but I think it's a bit rough leaving out images and flash disabled, you won't really need to do that on adsl.

but once you try 4mb, kiss it good bye, you will never go back, I was busy crunching my budget the other day and thought to myself "maybe I should downgrade to 384 and save the extra R250", I went home and downloaded something at 400 Kb/s and scraped that idea quickly :D

You'll probably get around 1.8 gigs on that 1 gig before u get capped.

If u need more, u can get prepaid from Axxess, Openweb etc. Costs around R70 a gig.

I think my only concern now is the modem I get. Hopefully I can setup the WiFi up securely.

set your router to bridged mode and you won't have to much to worry about, also IMO WIFI is very over-rated, it drops the connection, loses packets and is generally frustrating, very cool initially but the wow factor wears off pretty quickly.

Yeah, 384 is cool and as everyone mentioned your 1G will be used up very quickly...more often than not, far far before the end of the month. Buy yourself a prepaid....remember NOT a Telkom top-up though.....Axxess, WebAfrica, etc, etc
