Agreed. I think the time it takes to solve the problem is a good indication of the company’s competence in these situations.

And when the whole country lost connectivity for days?! Is that normal too? The fact that we have no choice means we can bitch about ANY outage.

i agree munwaal, we just got 2 get used to it :(
I think that the problem - we've gotten so used to cruddy service its become acceptable.

I'm mean hey why not offer overpriced sub-par services - what you going to do about it? We're Proudly South African.

And btw - without a strong independent regulator what's going to prevent the SNO from treating us exactly the same way as telkom does?

While cell phone calls ARE high, competition in the market does exist.

There are many packages available, free phones and the like.

So yes, while Telkom and the SNO may behave like the cell operators, there will still be more innovation than Telkom by itself.

Innovation or finally following international trends - and at what cost to the consumer? SA is the land of artificially inflated prices - look at the automotive industry if you need another example.

Most of SA's prices are terribly inflated... I'm hoping that when the SNO arrives, they'll have some good plans for countering Telkom's likely reactions.

I think it will take quite some time for them to establish their own infrastructure so they'll be dependent on Telkom for a while. The chances are good that there will be a mass swap to the new provider no matter what though.

Of course, if I find out Telkom has 51% shares in the SNO, I'll get depressed and leave :)

The automotive industry is a diffrent story tho, Cars are considered a luxury in this country so the governemnt imposes a Luxury Tax on them, thats the only reason that they are so expensive.

That might be part of it but surely you cant deny there is some collusion going on as well as the admitted practices of enforced price fixing by the manufacturers.

Well, the rumor goes that it's cheaper to buy and import from other countries than to buy local... :)

According to Telkom, the problem only affected those customers who dial into the Rosebank exchange. "Customers who connect to other exchanges around SA should not have been affected at all," comments Vapi.

Well that's strange bcos I experienced problems yesterday lunchtime, and AFAIK the Olivedale exchange has nothing to do with the Rosebank exchange, anyways it did come right eventually :).

I also had problems around 1pm - 3pm. And I am on the west rand (Weltevreden park). Last time I checked, that was much further away than the "5km from the exchange" criteria.
