Have been watching the broadband price wars and so far telkom still the best/cheapest for someone who is retired. Presently only paying R133.22 for adsl line plus R130.70 for 5gig all access and then i still get a R37.77 discount every month. I f there is somwthing better out there i would like to know about it. A lot of pensioners do not know that they can get discounts from telkom;)

Hi matroos - the prices you have given are Ex. VAT. The price of of the combined package of ADSL line and data inclusive of VAT is R258/month. I think the discount only comes in when you buy both products together in a package. You could, however, buy your data elsewhere and just pay Telkom for R152 for your ADSL line. 5 GB might be beyond the needs for some people in which case they are paying for more than they use. If this is the case, you could buy your data from say Afrihost - start with their Bronze Package which gives 1 GB for R29 and then top-up with GB's @R29/GB when the need arises. Afrihost also has specials on top-ups towards the end of a month where you can get 2GBs for the price of one. The only downside is that you will lose your Telkom email address and Afrihost only accepts payment by credit card. I'm sure other forumites will have other suggestions for you.

There is no pensioner discount - the R37.77 is the same discount everybody gets regardless of age if they buy a Do package.

Reduced installation charge and monthly rental for social pensioners:
In respect of one main basic telephone service for residential purposes for the recipient of an older persons, disability and war veterans grant,
as defined in the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act 13 of 2004) as well as other pensioners whose total monthly income is not more than the
maximum pension of the aforementioned social pensioners: Provided that such a person renders proof to the satisfaction of Telkom SA
Limited regarding his/her status as a pensioner and that he/she is the head of the household at the address where the telephone service is to
be provided to him/her or that he/she requires the telephone service for his/her own use in an old age home or similar institution.
Social pensioners retain their reduced line rental if they apply for any supplementary services such as TalkPlus, Surfmore, ADSL etc.
However, if a social pensioner choose to subscribe to the InfinitCall Plan he/she will forfeit the reduced rental and the service will be
converted to a normal full rental residential service.
Phew, long winded explanation.

Pensioners get discount on:
- Installation/transfer charges
- Rental
- Automatic exchange
- Exchange connection
- Party-line service
- Manual exchanges
- Exchange connection
- Message rate
- Flat rate
- Party-line service

But, yea, they do not get discount on bandwidth.

I'm not sure what a social pensioner is - could such a pensioner be getting social grants in addition to their state pension?

Social pensioner according to Telkom (According to 10219).
Either:
1. A person who can prove that they are over the age of 70 with a green barcoded South African ID book, or
2. A person who is benefiting from a government supplied social grant (including the government pension), this person must have a government supplied social grant card, also called a pensioners card.

I wonder if Telkom will hire me to rewrite their explanations.
